About The Position
Under general supervision, the Water Utility Worker II performs journey level work in the maintenance and repair of water distribution facilities; operates heavy equipment and tools in a highly skilled manner; and performs other related duties as assigned. Supervision is provided by the Deputy Director of Utilities or their designee.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a municipal water system infrastructure are required.
- Knowledge of: Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of water services and mains, valves, meters, and various other water system appurtenances; record keeping and reporting procedures; and safe work practices.
- Ability to: Read and interpret construction plans and specifications; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and understand and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is required.
- Ability to obtain a Class “B” California Driver’s License within one year of appointment is required.
- Possession of a Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) at time of application is required.
Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of activities associated with the installation, modification, service, and repair of water distribution facilities and equipment; locates water services and mains; installs and repairs water mains, services, meters, valves, fire hydrants, and other water distribution system appurtenances; notifies customers of scheduled and emergency outages and shut-downs of the distribution system for planned and emergency work; may operate heavy machinery including dump truck and backhoe; conducts traffic control; maintains and operates safely and effectively jackhammers, concrete saws, compressors, and stompers; operates company vehicles and equipment according to established safety procedures; and performs other related duties as assigned.
