About The Position

California Water Service Group (Cal Water) is seeking an Asset Management Engineer to join their Tank & Pipeline Engineering (T&PE) team. This role supports the company's mission to be a leading provider of water and wastewater services. The T&PE team focuses on engineering and maintenance for a variety of infrastructure including tanks, pipelines, pumps, and treatment facilities. The Asset Management Engineer will play a key role in managing risk and reliability programs, infrastructure renewal, capital program management, life-cycle assessments, and technical reviews. The position also contributes to capital planning, business case development, performance metrics, strategic maintenance, and the company's Enterprise Asset Management Program. The role is based in San Jose, California.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited university and/or equivalent relevant water utility experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent presentation skills, and the ability to articulate technical project work and concepts.
  • Excellent customer service support-oriented attitude and skills.
  • Willingness to travel as required by project and program needs, including full-day trips, overnight travel, and multiple-day travel via vehicle, group, and air.
  • Ability to climb tanks, work at heights, and enter confined spaces.
  • Valid California Driver License.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience working in an asset management engineering capacity is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Perform condition assessments of tank, pipeline, and pump infrastructure, which may involve climbing tanks to heights over 130 feet, entering confined spaces, and frequent travel.
  • Attend field work, meetings, and trainings as directed.
  • Make presentations both internally and externally.
  • Coordinate and advise on projects, clearly communicating project work, risks, benefits, and options between contractors, districts, field staff, and management.
  • Identify, evaluate, plan, estimate, budget, execute, and document repair/maintenance, and preventative maintenance for various assets including tanks, pipelines, pressure vessels, wells, pumps, motors, and other assigned asset classes.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple projects in various geographic locations.
  • Resolve issues with vendors and/or contractors regarding project commencement, execution, and completion.
  • Review and approve vendor and contractor invoices for payment.
  • Prepare, monitor, and report on assigned project schedules and budgets.
  • Investigate maintenance problems involving complex operating conditions and failure modes.
  • Troubleshoot, analyze, and make recommendations for declining or failed equipment.
  • Develop maintenance programs (e.g., tank inspection, pressure vessel inspection, CP effectiveness, pipeline rehabilitation, pump efficiency, well rehabilitation and replacement) to enhance Cal Water asset reliability or as part of a preventative maintenance program.
  • Prepare drawings and specifications, manage project schedules and budgets, perform planning and cost estimating, and prepare and award contracts.
  • Provide technical support for water systems operations and maintenance.
  • Prepare project documentation and cost estimates, including technical reports and justifications for the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
  • Oversee the removal and destruction of existing water utility facilities.
  • Participate in and lead special investigation projects requiring collaboration with internal groups and outside regulatory agencies.
  • Work on-site in the assigned office location.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business operational needs and objectives.
