About The Position

Charlotte Water is an enterprise department of the City of Charlotte and one of the largest public water and sewer service providers in the southeast with over 330,000 customer accounts and over 1100 employees. Our service area includes the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the towns of Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mint Hill, Matthews and Pineville. The Senior Water Service Technician (Commercial group), under the general supervision of the Labor Crew Chief II, is responsible for the vehicle, and all job assignments allocated. Performs a variety of technical work associated with water services and metering equipment. Work involves potential revenue loss, turning services on/off; reading and validating meter readings: installing and maintaining meters; utilizing mobile equipment and devices for managing service orders; and investigating water pressure and high bill complaints.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience, preferably in customer service and water utility operations.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license
  • Must obtain and maintain a City Driver’s Permit.
  • Ability to follow directives and instructions.
  • Knowledge of service order management systems, as well as the operations, services, and activities of a water distribution system
  • Ability to assess hazards and implement traffic control.
  • Ability to stay calm and effective under pressure or in emergencies.
  • Knowledge of meter operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with utility field customer service operations and meter billing processes.
  • Proficiency in using business computing software (e.g., MS Office Suite).
  • Ability to read and interpret AWWA industry standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to apply quality best practices.
  • Daily driving; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting (0–60 lbs.).
  • Must be able to apply 20 lbs. of force constantly, 30 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Requires climbing, entering confined spaces, balance, manual dexterity, auditory and visual acuity, and physical endurance on uneven terrain and in various weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of related work experience, preferably in customer service and water utility operations.
  • Experience in plumbing, water meter installation, or water system maintenance.
  • Knowledge of and experience performing various semi-skilled maintenance and manual labor tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive field inspections of water metering equipment for proper operation.
  • Receives and completes all assigned service work within a specified time period, while accurately recording the water meter readings and entering pertinent notes associated with the work performed and any notable conditions at each service address into a portable laptop.
  • Performs maintenance and/or replacement of water meter, register, and endpoint as needed.
  • Performs water flow test on meter to ensure equipment is functioning properly.
  • Inspect water meter connections for leaks and replaces material as needed to repair leak; escalates situation if required.
  • Investigates customer complaints regarding such matters as high bills, low/high water pressure; escalates situation if required.
  • Receives, reviews and performs work while serving as a competent person on the job site.
  • Performs meter box maintenance by cleaning out dirt and debris and ensures meter box lids fit correctly; reports any deficiencies or service line repairs.
  • Performs daily inspection and preventative maintenance of vehicle, computer equipment, and tools for proper function, reports malfunctions or deficiencies.
  • Reports on Fire hydrant leak, water main leaks, and other water distribution issues in a timely manner.
  • Informs customers on department related practices in meter reading and billing processes, quality assurance validations, responsibilities, and limitations for service repairs on private property issues.
  • Performs other work tasks and duties as assigned or required.
