About The Position

Under the direction of the Water Rights Section Manager, the intern’s primary focus will include adjudication and state water rights on State Trust land. This position will assist staff in researching surface and groundwater rights and coordinate with internal staff to develop and maintain ground and surface water rights, claims, and filings for State Trust land. The position will also investigate and research projects with the goal of protecting and enhancing water resources for State Trust land. This internship will also review and maintain water related databases, generate maps, and assist with inputting data for water users. this includes preparation of water right claim documents, file management, and other correspondence as necessary, to support the groundwater and surface water right claims and actions of the State Land Department. Interns are hired on a temporary basis and are typically part-time (under 20 hours weekly) unless indicated by the hiring supervisor. Interns are not benefit eligible and work at the discretion of the appointing authority. Interns may be employed through their approved assignment or the department determines that the work is no longer required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of water resources and water rights, state water use and availability laws, and basic hydrology
  • Knowledge of legal land descriptions and the interpretation of maps, including topographic, land status, aerial, geologic, and hydrological
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and local statutes, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures applicable to water resources
  • Skilled in organizing, analyzing and interpreting data
  • Skilled in verbal and written communication
  • Skilled in time management and organization
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions as outlined
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and organize work activities and projects
  • Ability to demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete required driver training.
  • Must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

  • Computer skills including, but not limited to application programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS and GPS equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Review and maintain water related databases.
  • Coordinate with internal staff to develop and maintain ground and surface water rights, claims, and filings for State Trust land.
  • Assist with the preparation of water right claim documents and other correspondence as necessary to support the groundwater and surface water right claims and actions of the State Land Department.
  • Assist with inputting data for water users.
  • Assistance with file management.
  • Generate computerized maps as necessary.
  • Report weekly to supervisor on progress.
  • Other duties as assigned.
