About The Position

Barr is seeking a water resources consultant with experience in water balance modelling, particularly GoldSim, to deliver practical and innovative solutions to environmental challenges. The consultant will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and apply water balance models for project planning and operational improvements, and perform technical analyses to help clients optimize water management strategies and improve environmental resilience. Anticipated project work includes site-wide and basin-scale water balance modelling; operational and scenario planning for mining and industrial water management; hydrologic evaluations; climate risk assessment; and water resilience planning. Work may also include hydrologic analysis for stormwater planning and flood control, hydraulic analysis for dams, tailings basins, and other water control structures, and water-quality assessments supporting compliance and environmental stewardship. The successful candidate will work with and/or oversee diverse teams of engineers and scientists, integrating expertise from multiple disciplines into water balance models. The role requires a flexible working style and occasional schedule adjustments to meet deadlines and client needs. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are essential. The position may be hybrid, splitting time between Barr’s Calgary office and a home office, or remote, working primarily from a home office. Remote arrangements depend on candidate qualifications, local regulations, and Barr’s needs. The candidate must be able to perform the job duties in an office environment, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, or mining engineering with an emphasis on mine water management, or a bachelor’s degree in math, science, or another related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of applied experience performing water balances and water resources analysis and modelling, or at least 5 years of experience leading water resources projects within the mining industry.
  • Experience developing water balance models using spreadsheet-based and advanced simulation tools, particularly GoldSim.
  • Understanding of flow control structures such as pumps, weirs, and drop structures, how they operate, and methods for representing them in water balance models.
  • Understanding of mine operations and how changes to pits, dams, and processing over time affect water management.
  • Knowledge of GoldSim and other commonly used modelling software.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients.
  • Current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without current or future sponsorship from Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada Ltd.
  • Ability to work in an office environment and perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify schedule to meet deadlines and client needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in civil, environmental, or mining engineering with an emphasis on mine water management, or in math, science, or another related discipline.
  • Professional engineering certification (P.Eng.) in Alberta, or ability to become certified within one year.
  • Experience advising clients on mine water management strategies and alternatives analysis, and a track record of building and sustaining client relationships.
  • Familiarity with publicly available datasets for hydrologic analyses, such as USGS gage data in the USA, Canadian hydrometric stations, and climate data from NWS, Environment Canada, or other gages.
  • Experience with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, XPSWMM/PCSWMM, HSPF, HydroCAD, CE-QUAL-W2, MS Excel, or the MIKE Suite of tools.
  • Experience designing surface water impoundments, such as process ponds, water supply dams, and reservoirs.
  • Experience interacting with, coordinating, and potentially leading or managing multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience in business development through technical means, such as conference presentations or proposal writing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply GoldSim water balance models for project planning and operational improvements.
  • Perform water balance modelling for site-wide and basin-scale projects, including operational forecasting, scenario planning, sensitivity and uncertainty evaluation, and risk assessment.
  • Perform technical analyses to help clients optimize water management strategies and enhance environmental resilience.
  • Support mining and industrial water management, climate risk assessment, and water resilience planning.
  • Conduct hydrologic analyses for stormwater planning and flood control, hydraulic analyses for dams, tailings basins and other water control structures, and water-quality assessments.
  • Translate complex modelling outcomes into practical, actionable guidance for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop conceptual models and perform hydrologic, hydraulic, and/or water-quality analyses and studies, along with QA/QC.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects; help ensure milestones are met and provide regular updates to project managers and clients.
  • Provide QA/QC, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior staff.
  • Work with and/or oversee multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists.

Benefits
