About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Watershed Maintainer within the Water Supply Water Resource Recovery Operations Division, Drinking Water Operations Directorate, for a position at the Water Resource Recovery Facility, located in Tannersville, New York. Under supervision, of the Supervisor Watershed Maintenance II of collections, the Watershed Maintainer will be responsible for work within the collection systems and performing daily operations to maintain NYSDEC (New York State Department of Environmental Conservation) SPDES (State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) compliance.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities; or A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as: a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
  • Candidates will be required obtain and maintain a New York State Grade 2 Water Treatment Operator Certification within two (2) years.
  • By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting corrective maintenance repairs within the collection systems
  • Conducting equipment maintenance projects, housekeeping, ground maintenance
  • Performing wastewater laboratory analysis for process and SPDES reporting
  • Acquiring and maintaining Wastewater Certification
  • Inspecting, flushing, and repairing the collection system components
  • Inspecting, operating, and adjusting wastewater treatment equipment; reporting problems or unusual conditions
  • Maintaining, lubricating, greasing, cleaning, painting and adjusting equipment as scheduled or needed
