About The Position

The City of Indianola is seeking a Water Resource Recovery Superintendent to manage the Water Resource Recovery Division (WRRD). This role involves developing short and mid-range goals, overseeing operational, financial, and personnel activities, and directing the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, and sewer collection systems. The Superintendent ensures environmental health and compliance through effective management and communication with regulatory agencies like the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Responsibilities include planning, prioritizing, supervising staff, managing daily operations, establishing maintenance schedules, identifying problem areas, and preparing and administering the division's budget and capital plans.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by an associate's degree in biology, chemistry, wastewater, environmental engineering, management, or related field.
  • Two years of DRC in Grade III or higher.
  • Must possess and maintain a current non-restricted Grade IV Wastewater Operators Certification from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IA DNR).
  • Possession of current Class B CDL with Air Brakes and Tanker or able to obtain one within 6 months of hire date and maintain license for duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plants.
  • One (1) year of administrative or supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develops short and mid-range goals for the Water Resource Recovery Division.
  • Manages the operational, financial, and personnel activities of the division.
  • Directs the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, and sewer collection systems.
  • Ensures environmental health and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Communicates with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, reviews, and participates in the work of staff.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of the plant and sewer collection systems including lift stations.
  • Establishes schedules and methods for providing wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance services.
  • Identifies problem areas in the collection system and treatment plant that require special attention.
  • Reviews needs with appropriate management staff and allocates resources accordingly.
  • Oversees and participates in the preparation and administration of the division budget, expenditures, and capital plans.
