About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Water Foreman, this position performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water/sewer systems, facilities, streets, driveways, and walkways. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Compliance with federal regulations where marijuana remains illegal is required, and possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety-sensitive positions. A positive drug test for these positions may result in termination due to the zero-tolerance policy.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Oklahoma state driver's license and CDL Class “B” with air brake endorsement, or ability to obtain one.
  • Must be insurable with City’s insurance carrier.
  • Must hold a Certificate of Competency, as issued and required by state law from the Department of Environmental Quality, as the “D” level or higher classification water and sewer work operator, or secure one within one year of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years of water/sewer system work experience is preferred.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and/or repairs water distribution system and sewer system at frequent intervals to ensure proper functioning.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activities of both systems.
  • Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water, and sewer lines from appropriate sources prior to excavation.
  • Contacts residents and business owners in an area where services will be disconnected to explain service shut-off times and restoration.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking them after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights for loading, hauling, and unloading equipment, gravel, and sand.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, referring defects or needed repairs to the Crew Foreman, and cleans equipment.
  • Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying, and backfilling.
  • Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, pipe, gates, and fittings on repair of mains and services, and installation of services, fire hydrants, and drinking fountains; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Water/Sewer Systems department.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
