The Wastewater Treatment Operator I is responsible for the day-to-day operations of wastewater treatment, performing a variety of duties related to the collection, treatment and distribution of water and wastewater. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year wastewater treatment experience or equivalent training/certification strongly preferred.
  • Basic mechanical competency with standard wastewater equipment to include, pumps, and automation required.
  • Operator-in-Training (OIT) Wastewater Operator Certification by state agency required or obtained within one (1) year of hire.
  • Basic Wastewater Operator Certification recommended after two (2) years.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with colleagues and individuals inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy in work.
  • Ability to extract, analyze, and act on information with limited supervisory input.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the wastewater treatment system in compliance with organization discharge limits.
  • Operate wastewater treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater treatment plant to control flow and processing of wastewater.
  • Monitor control panels and adjust valves manually or by remote control to regulate flow of influent and chemicals.
  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret metered, gauged readings and test results to determine load requirements.
  • Start and stop pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of wastewater through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  • Maintain log of operations and record meter and gauge readings.
  • Assist with and monitor the load-out of sludges.
  • Perform routine inspections of tanks and other associated equipment to ensure mechanical and physical integrity of the system.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of wastewater plant equipment and basic troubleshooting of maintenance/electrical issues.
  • Perform wastewater plant sampling of processes, and complete analysis of samples.
  • Perform monitoring of wastewater plant processes and make adjustments as needed.
  • Perform sampling, filtration, and preservation of monitoring wells. May conduct tests, such as pH, turbidity and chemical concentrations (bench testing).
  • May operate and maintain power generating equipment to provide air and electricity for plant.
  • Understand and comply with all Quality Assurance policies, immediately reporting any potential food safety issues to management.
  • Understand and adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Stop any observed unsafe acts and obey facility safety rules and procedures.
  • Correct or report any observed safety hazards.
  • Support safety policies and programs.
