About The Position

Under general supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, performs a variety of wastewater collection related activities including operation of aseptic pumper truck to support the septic system maintenance program. Operates heavy vacuum truck, as well as other CDL vehicles, to perform wastewater collection system maintenance including sewer line cleaning. Maintains Community sewage lift stations. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and is considered DRIVING, subject to working on call and weekend hours.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED and at least two (2) years of full-time work experience with wastewater collection and/or septic systems.
  • At least one year of experience operating heavy vacuum truck, high velocity sewer cleaning equipment, or septic pumper truck.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Ability to work non-standard, flexible shifts and respond to after hours on-call emergencies.
  • Ability to work safely near automobile traffic, underground utility lines, and with exposure to excavations and trenches.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, under heavy physical exertion, and various weather conditions.
  • Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
  • Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

  • ADEQ or ITCA Grade I Wastewater Collection Certification preferred.
  • An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Responsibilities

  • Operates septic tank pumper truck, driving from site to site, and to the waste water/septic dumping station. Locates septic tank and dry well at various residences or other locations and assist with uncovering the access ports, if necessary. Operates vacuum pump on the truck, draining the septic tank at the site, and uses appropriate precautions to transport sewage to the appropriate dump site.
  • Utilizes computerized work order system to determine tanks to be serviced each day. Closes out work orders in the computer when complete.
  • Responds to emergency calls to resolve customer septic tank issues, including after-hours response. May also be called upon to support other Department functions in emergency situations.
  • Performs routine daily checks and maintenance on Community lift stations ranging in size from simple duplex pump station serving a single subdivision to a 4 MGD station conveying all sanitary sewer from the Community to the treatment facility. Reports potential issues to Supervisor.
  • Operates a motor vehicle or equipment such as but not limited to: combination truck & trailer, dump truck carrying backhoe, etc., requiring a valid Arizona Class B CDL to service and maintain the Community’s wastewater system.
  • Assists in the installation of new septic systems for Community residents. Drives a ten wheeled dump truck to deliver aggregate materials to water distribution crews and to septic system installation sites. These duties also include transport of reject materials from the excavation sites to the proper disposal sites.
  • Operates a large vacuum/high velocity sewer cleaning truck to maintain the sewer related infrastructure and hydro excavate areas which are too sensitive and/or space limited to excavate by other mechanical means (backhoe).
  • Inspects vehicles before use and each afternoon at the completion of the day's assignments, by conducting a "walk around" check. Reports repairs and/or maintenance needs to Supervisor, or to the Fleet Department. Completes required reports, data entry, and other documents (such as pumping log, requisitions, etc.)
  • Assists Supervisor in developing parts and materials lists for all work. Keeps inventory of parts and supplies for septic pumper truck and heavy vacuum truck.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special assignments to maintain and enhance program and agency operation.
