The role reports to the Supervisor, Wastewater and Stormwater Collection.

Requirements

Must possess a current valid Wastewater Collection Licence - Operator in Training (OIT) with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) (by exam).
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in wastewater and stormwater collection system maintenance or investigation.
Must be available and able to work shifts including weekends, nights, etc., with crew and independently with minimal supervision.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 kgs., with an occasional requirement to lift up to 60 kgs.
Must possess technical knowledge of wastewater and stormwater collection systems and be capable of carrying out, directing, and reporting on a variety of complex tasks.
Computer literacy and proficiency utilizing Microsoft software (Word, Excel, & Outlook).
Must be able to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts, both verbally and in writing.
Must possess a Class "G" driver’s licence with a satisfactory driver's record.
Must possess and maintain a Class "G" Driver's License valid in the Province of Ontario and a point-free driving record and or record found to be satisfactory to the City of Hamilton.
Successful applicant(s) will be required to obtain a satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC), at their own expense, prior to beginning work in this position.
Shall comply with all Health and Safety policies and practices for this position and the workplace.

Nice To Haves

Written Class 1 Wastewater Collection Licence with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Certification (by exam) preferred.
Previous experience working with asset management software (Hansen preferred).

Responsibilities

Completes investigations and inspections on the wastewater and stormwater collection system.
Completes repairs, maintenance, and installations on the collection system and other system appurtenances.
Investigates problems such as sewer back-ups, sinkholes, odours, and flooding, which may require confined space entries.
Performs repairs and maintenance on the wastewater and stormwater collection system, potentially involving confined space entries.
Ensures all functions comply with current City Health and Safety policies, construction specification policies, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Monitors and controls work and job site conditions to protect workers, the public, pedestrians, and vehicular traffic.
Assists in the management of wastewater cleaning and video contracts, including inspection.
Reads and interprets blueprints, GIS, and sketches of the system.
Provides corrections and updates to wastewater and stormwater records (manual and electronic).
Performs routine inspections and maintenance of manholes, outfalls, regulators, inlets, overflows, siphons, air release valves, stormwater ponds, watercourses, municipal drains, and other system appurtenances, and records activities.
Performs hydraulic flushing of sewers, working alongside contractors.
Completes or arranges for job site restoration, including grass removal, sod, topsoil, concrete, and asphalt.
Applies products to sewers for the control of grease, odours, rodents, and concrete void filler.
Notifies dispatchers, contractors, other maintenance crews, and the public of collection maintenance activities.
Operates equipment such as hand tools, generators, metal detectors, pumps, gas detectors, confined space entry equipment, portable flow monitors, digital cameras, GoPros, zoom cameras, and tablets.
Takes samples as required and delivers them to the lab.
Configures traffic plans and sets up signs and delineation for traffic control.
Drives a vehicle, loads and unloads parts and equipment, and maintains the vehicle in clean operating condition, performing daily circle checks.
Performs regular inspection service and preventative maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles.
Locates storm sewers, sanitary sewers, combined sewers, force mains, cross connections (including dye testing), outfalls, inlets, and manholes, and provides written reports.
Completes forms, manually or electronically, such as inspection reports, work orders, and daily logs.
Utilizes computerized maintenance management systems for data acquisition (Hansen).
Trains new staff as required.
Maintains yard, equipment, and inventory.
Performs other assigned duties directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.
