About The Position

The VP of Pharmacy is responsible for the end-to-end performance of pharmacy operations, including outpatient pharmacies, mail order services, and the external retail pharmacy network for US Family Health Plan of Southern New England (USFHP). This executive leads pharmacy fulfillment, dispensing, fulfillment center operations, quality assurance, inventory management, and regulatory compliance with driving operational efficiency, scalability, safety and high-quality patient care and member experience. This leader also procures and manages pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) relationships, drug utilization management, and cost-saving initiatives while providing high-quality pharmacy services at scale.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
  • 10+ years of progressive pharmacy operations leadership experience in retail or managed care pharmacy, including senior leadership roles
  • Registered Pharmacist (RPh) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Maintenance of Continuing Education Credits as required by the Board of Registration of Pharmacy
  • Deep knowledge of pharmacy regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and audit processes
  • Proven track record of managing complex operations and high volumes
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skill
  • Expertise in managed care pharmacy philosophy and practice
  • Proficiency in pharmacy technology, relational databases, and robotics automation
  • Ability to analyze drug utilization trends, develop cost-saving strategies, and optimize pharmacy operations

Responsibilities

  • Lead all retail pharmacy operations, including prescription intake, dispensing, fulfillment, shipping and returns across one or more fulfillment centers
  • Develop and execute operational strategy aligned with organizational growth objectives, service levels and cost targets
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, productivity, accuracy, cycle time reduction and capacity planning
  • Lead operational readiness for growth, new business onboarding, seasonal volume surges, and new product launches
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and accrediting bodies (e.g. state Boards of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, URAC and Massachusetts Controlled Substance licensure
  • Oversee audit readiness, inspections, correct action plans and documentation standards
  • Champion medication safety, quality assurance programs and error reduction initiatives
  • Partner with USFHP Compliance and Clinical leaders and Legal to interpret and operationalize regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and re-credential contracts with insurance plans, NCPDP, and NPI numbers for pharmacy claim processing
  • Implement policies and procedures to enhance patient safety, medication management, and regulatory adherence
  • Own pharmacy operations P&L elements including labor, inventory controls, waste and shipping costs
  • Develop and execute specialty drug strategy to support organizational growth
  • Establish and monitor KPIs such as turnaround time, order accuracy, cost per script, inventory turns and service-level agreements
  • Identify and execute cost optimization opportunities including Drug Utilization Review (DUR), Specialty Pharmacy and Mail Order utilization while maintaining quality and regulatory standards
  • Align pharmacy financial performance with organizational business objectives
  • Build, lead and develop high performing, potentially multi-site pharmacy operations teams including directors, managers, pharmacists and technicians
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, compliance and continuous improvement
  • Drive workforce planning, succession planning and leadership development across operations
  • Partner with Human Resources on labor strategy, retention, engagement and workforce scalability
  • Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation in pharmacy services
  • Provide drug utilization management and educational guidance to clinicians to optimize prescription drug therapy
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to enhance clinical pharmacy services and integrate care
  • Work with ScriptPro and other technology providers to optimize pharmacy automation and information systems
  • Serve as a key operational partner to USFHP by serving as liaison with PBMs
  • Work closely with Customer Experience leader to resolve escalations and improve member satisfaction
  • Support organizational initiatives involving consolidations, partnerships, new fulfillment locations or platform migrations
  • Provide pharmacy benefit updates for sales and marketing teams to ensure accurate communication with members and providers
  • Partner with the CMO and applicable stakeholders on pharmacy-related quality initiatives
