About The Position

The VP of HOA Accounting is responsible for maintaining AAM's high standard of financial services for all associations under management and serving as the department's technical accounting authority. This role ensures association financial reporting is accurate, timely, and prepared in accordance with industry standards. The VP leads and develops an accounting management team, provides direct supervision of Controllers, oversees technical training, drives process improvement, standardization, and data-informed operations across the department. This position partners with the SVP of Financial Operations on strategic and departmental direction, and supports the Senior Leadership Team, Community Managers, community association boards, community committees, and developer clients on accounting-related projects and concerns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Five (5) + years of experience in a leadership role within accounting.
  • Expert level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, power query, macros, and data analysis.
  • Technical accounting expertise — deep understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and association financials.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Excel, with the ability to analyze large data sets, build reliable models, automate reporting, and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Significant professional management experience with the ability to lead people and achieve results through others.
  • Demonstrated ability to hold teams accountable to expectations while maintaining a positive and engaging team environment.
  • Experience leading and developing geographically distributed or international teams.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with management to ensure effective management of AAM, LLC's community financial reporting and accounting services, contributing to strategic planning, and supporting executive leadership in setting and advancing departmental direction and priorities.
  • Leads a highly skilled accounting team focused on achieving organizational goals, including hiring, onboarding, training, and developing team members to grow capability and improve outcomes.
  • Onboards new associations' financials, ensuring their accounting is set up smoothly and correctly for complex communities.
  • Organizes team schedules, staffing plans, and workload assignments; uses metrics to monitor portfolio distribution and ensure team members are neither overwhelmed nor under-utilized.
  • Delegates assignments effectively across Controllers and direct reports, holding team members accountable to performance expectations and departmental goals.
  • Navigates high-stakes financial talks with boards and sensitive performance discussions with staff, resolving complex or tense situations with professional ease.
  • Conducts performance evaluations, provides ongoing coaching and feedback, and partners with HR and the SVP on performance management, disciplinary actions, and termination recommendations.
  • Conducts accounting management team meetings with the Controllers and fosters a positive, accountable team environment.
  • Manages a specialized portfolio of complex HOA accounts, stepping in to untangle deep-rooted financial issues and creating clear resolution roadmaps.
  • Assists SVP of Financial Operations in maintaining internal controls applicable to AAM SSAE-18 / SOC audit.
  • Partners with SVP of Financial Operations on strategic planning.
  • Partners with AAM Business Development on sales presentations and community related workshops.
  • Partners with AAM Training team on training for Association Boards and Community Managers.
  • Partners with SVP of Financial Operations to ensure effective management of AAM, LLC’s community financial reporting and accounting services.
  • Meets with boards to discuss banking and cash management best practices.
  • Supervises Accounting Department Controllers to ensure Staff Accountant responsibilities are carried out accurately and on time, and that contracted deadlines and quality financial review standards are met.
  • Completes monthly reviews of 100+ financial statements within contracted deadlines, leveraging data insights to identify departmental training gaps and process improvement opportunities.
  • Partners with Controllers on duties related to CPA firm engagements for tax return and compilation/review/audit preparation.
  • Provides guidance to association clients regarding financial statements and accounting regulations.
  • Serves as the department's technical accounting resource — ensures the team applies GAAP correctly across association financials and provides ongoing technical training and guidance to Controllers and Staff Accountants.
  • Oversees the accounting migration of association acquisitions.
  • Defines, monitors, and improves departmental metrics and KPIs; uses data and reporting to identify bottlenecks and works through direct-report Controllers to resolve them.
  • Acts as a change leader driving productivity and efficiency across accounting department functions — proactively identifies process gaps, brings forward solutions, and advances standardization and improved practices over outdated methods.
  • Ensures current department policies and procedures are documented.
  • Partners with the IT Department to implement, maintain, and improve accounting systems.
  • Attends and presents at association, board, training or Annual Meetings as requested.
  • Participates in AAM Operations Team meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.
