VP of Accounting

Summit Mortgage CorporationPlymouth, MN
$125,000 - $150,000Onsite

About The Position

Summit Mortgage Corporation is a privately held independent mortgage banker serving customers and partners through multiple mortgage channels. We are building the people, process discipline, financial controls, and decision systems required to operate responsibly through changing market cycles and to grow with confidence. Summit Mortgage is hiring a VP of Accounting to own the reliability of our accounting function. This is not a role for someone who only prepares statements after the fact. We need a builder who can lead a disciplined month end close, strengthen controls, make balance-sheet issues visible, develop accountants, and create an accounting environment the rest of the company can trust. At Summit, strong performance means more than completing assigned tasks. We expect people to understand why the work matters, own the results entrusted to them, make decisions within clear authority, surface problems early, learn from mistakes, and close the loop. We want capable people to have room to think and improve the system while operating within disciplined financial and regulatory guardrails.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful ownership of close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and controls.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing the work of others and leading a close process or accounting team.
  • Strong US GAAP knowledge and ability to research/document non-routine accounting positions.
  • Experience with audits, internal controls, balance-sheet governance, and financial-statement preparation.
  • Advanced Excel and strong accounting-system fluency.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical issues to executives and operating leaders.
  • Ability to work onsite with the Summit team in Plymouth, Minnesota, with flexibility appropriate to a leadership role.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA active or eligible; equivalent demonstrated technical depth may be considered.
  • Mortgage banking, banking, specialty finance, or other transaction-intensive financial-services accounting experience.
  • Experience with warehouse lines, loan-level accounting, servicing, investor settlements, trust/borrower funds, or gain-on-sale accounting.
  • Experience improving a close, implementing controls, or strengthening an accounting system after a period of blended responsibilities.
  • Experience with AMB, LoanVision, or comparable financial systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the month-end close calendar, sequencing, reviews, issue resolution, and final readiness.
  • Prepare or oversee monthly financial statements, supporting schedules, and management reporting.
  • Own balance-sheet integrity, reconciliations, journal-entry review, and aging-item resolution.
  • Maintain GAAP policies and document routine and non-routine accounting positions.
  • Design and improve internal controls, evidence standards, approval paths, and remediation processes.
  • Lead audit preparation and external financial review support.
  • Oversee mortgage-specific accounting, including loan-level, warehouse, servicing, investor/loan-sale, held for investment (HFI)/recovery, and borrower/trust-related work as applicable.
  • Lead, review, coach, and develop the accounting team; build cross-training and reduce key-person dependency.
  • Partner with the CEO and fractional CFO so strategy and forecasting begin with reliable actuals.
  • Strengthen systems, workpapers, processes, and change controls so the function scales without relying on heroics.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Professional development support.
