VP, Head of Finance

Auger•Dallas, TX

About The Position

Auger is the autonomous operating system for supply chains, designed to integrate disparate systems like ERP, WMS, and TMS. Unlike most supply chain software that highlights problems, Auger's AI detects disruptions, evaluates trade-offs, and executes decisions automatically, moving from signal to action rapidly. The company aims to eliminate the 'Coordination Tax' – the significant capital and time lost due to disconnected systems forcing human intervention. Auger emphasizes clear ownership, first principles, shipping systems over presentations, and learning from real-world feedback. The company is backed by $150M from Oak HC/FT and Eclipse Capital and has teams in Bellevue, WA, and Dallas, TX. This role is for a hands-on VP/Head of Finance to establish the financial and operational discipline necessary for Auger to become an efficient, profitable business. It is a deeply operational position focused on building metrics, processes, systems, and accountability that link platform operations to business performance. The individual will collaborate with engineering, product, commercial, and customer teams to understand and improve the economics of delivering autonomous work as the company scales. Responsibilities include building financial models, investigating compute costs, tracing customer usage for billing, challenging pricing assumptions, and driving decisions from operating reviews. The mandate is to make the business measurable, its economics understandable, and to empower teams to act on data-driven insights. The role involves working with incomplete data and evolving metrics, requiring the ability to build solutions independently and scale the team as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience owning operational finance at a SaaS or enterprise software company, ideally with usage-based pricing and significant cloud or AI infrastructure costs.
  • A record of building financial models, operating metrics, reporting, and processes from the ground up.
  • Strong command of SaaS metrics (ARR, net revenue retention, gross margin, CAC payback), unit economics, cost allocation, pricing, capacity planning, and cash management.
  • Ability to work directly with detailed data in SQL and business intelligence tools.
  • Experience working with engineering on compute consumption, model costs, instrumentation, and billing.
  • Sound accounting judgment, including revenue recognition for subscription and usage-based contracts.
  • Ability to oversee a reliable close and financial controls.
  • Evidence that your work has produced measurable improvements in efficiency, margins, or cash performance.
  • The judgment to introduce structure that helps people execute without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Takes ownership from identifying a problem through implementing a solution and verifying the result.
  • Gets close to the operational details, makes complicated economics understandable, and challenges assumptions constructively.
  • Builds processes people actually use.
  • Knows which decisions require precision and which require a timely, well-supported judgment.
  • Holds self accountable to the same standard Auger brings to its customers: doing the work and delivering measurable results.

Responsibilities

  • Build a trusted view of business performance by defining key metrics with clear owners and sources, and connecting infrastructure consumption, platform activity, contracts, billing, and financial results.
  • Turn reporting into action by identifying issues, quantifying their impact, assigning follow-through, and verifying results.
  • Build a detailed understanding of the costs of delivering Auger's platform, including compute, model inference, storage, networking, third-party services, implementation, and support.
  • Establish meaningful unit economics for the platform's work, linking resource consumption to completed workflows, executed decisions, and customer value.
  • Partner with engineering to evaluate capacity, architecture, vendor commitments, and build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Make customer growth economically sound by making implementation effort, time to value, cost to serve, gross margin, net revenue retention, and CAC payback visible and actionable.
  • Measure how customer economics change as additional solutions reuse existing platform knowledge.
  • Identify customers and contracts with unsustainable economics.
  • Own pricing strategy and its underlying economics, ensuring prices reflect value delivered and costs incurred.
  • Build a deal-review process to ensure contracts align with economic goals.
  • Recommend pricing evolution based on customer adoption and platform reuse.
  • Own the operating model, budget, rolling forecast, cash forecast, and scenario planning.
  • Establish weekly operating reviews and monthly financial reviews to explain performance, surface risks, and drive decisions.
  • Build practical processes for purchasing, vendor management, spending approvals, and investment evaluation.
  • Own financial reporting, the close process, and controls.
  • Reconcile books, operating dashboards, billing systems, and cash, and coordinate with tax and compliance specialists.
  • Deliver clear reporting to leadership and the board on key financial metrics.
  • Build the team, systems, and automation required to support Auger's scaling.
