About The Position

Yugabyte is seeking a VP of Engineering for its Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) organization. The role leads the teams responsible for building, shipping, and operating the ways customers use YugabyteDB as a service: YugabyteDB Aeon, Aeon BYOC, YugabyteDB Anywhere, and yugabyted. The VP owns roadmap delivery, product quality, and operations across these offerings, and is the executive owner of production for Aeon. The role sets standards for incident response, on-call health, availability, performance, and cost efficiency. It also owns the DBaaS Security and SRE charters, including product and cloud security, vulnerability management, compliance programs such as SOC 2, and practices that keep Aeon reliable. The VP is accountable for architectural decisions affecting resiliency, security, and cost, and remains technically engaged through design reviews and major incidents. The VP leads a global organization of engineers, managers, and SREs across multiple geographies, reporting to the SVP of Engineering. The role hires and develops leaders, supports high-performing teams, partners with Product, the core database team, Support, and the field, and represents Engineering to the executive team. The work spans cloud infrastructure and services across AWS, GCP, and Azure, including Kubernetes, Java frameworks, Python and shell automation, Terraform, and observability tooling.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, including several years leading managers and organizations of 50+ engineers across multiple locations.
  • Strong track record building and operating a mission-critical cloud service or SaaS platform, ideally for data infrastructure.
  • Experience owning or closely partnering with Security and SRE, including incident management, SLOs, and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
  • Technical depth in distributed systems and fault-tolerant designs, with sound judgment on architecture and cost trade-offs.
  • Record of hiring strong leaders and building engaged, high-performing teams.
  • Clear, direct communication with engineers, executives, and customers.
  • Experience with public cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, and/or Azure.
  • Experience with containerization tooling, theory, and design, such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code; Terraform is preferred.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability systems; Prometheus is preferred.
  • Experience with CI/CD systems; GitHub Actions is preferred.
  • Experience with relational database systems; PostgreSQL is preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies and concepts.
  • Collaboration, teamwork, empathy, and the ability to lead by example.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with databases or other stateful distributed systems.
  • Experience building a BYOC or hybrid deployment model, or a self-managed product alongside a managed service.
  • Experience at an open-source company and enthusiasm for working with the community.

Responsibilities

  • Own delivery of the roadmap for YugabyteDB Aeon, Aeon BYOC, YugabyteDB Anywhere, and yugabyted in partnership with Product.
  • Own the availability, performance, and cost efficiency of YugabyteDB Aeon, using SLOs and SRE golden signals to guide priorities.
  • Establish and lead incident response, postmortem, and on-call processes across databases and infrastructure.
  • Lead the Security charter, including secure design, encryption and key management, vulnerability management, and compliance certifications.
  • Build shared platform foundations for provisioning, upgrades, backups, observability, and automation across DBaaS products.
  • Partner with Support and the field on customer escalations and turn findings into product improvements.
  • Own headcount, budget, and cloud spend, and report progress clearly to the executive team.
  • Guide architectural decisions and design reviews, and lead major incidents with engineering teams.
  • Partner closely with Product, the core database team, Support, and the field, and represent Engineering to the executive team.
