About The Position

Volunteer roles require a minimum of 8 hours per month for at least a 3-month commitment to maintain an active Volunteer status. Several volunteer roles are available, including Guest Relations, Gallery Guide, Aquarist Animal Care, and Bird & Mammal Animal Care. Each role offers unique opportunities to enhance the guest experience and support daily operations at OdySea Aquarium.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check and drug screen.
  • Willingness to be flexible, learn, and multitask.
  • Positive attitude, team oriented, responsible, and enthusiastic.
  • No impairment of senses that might interfere with the ability to complete tasks.
  • Ability to complete tasks in an environment that may be loud, wet, or humid at times.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with guest ingress and egress, ticketing, wayfinding, Deep Ocean Theater and OdySea Voyager operations, and aiding with large groups and special events (Guest Relations).
  • Enhancing the guest experience through educational opportunities, welcoming and educating guests about diverse animals, contributing to educational opportunities at touch exhibits, roving engagement through aquarium galleries, and live interpretation at animal exhibits (Gallery Guide).
  • Supporting daily operations such as husbandry and cleaning, diet preparation, enrichment creation, and guest engagement, learning about diverse aquatic species (Aquarist Animal Care).
  • Supporting daily operations such as husbandry and cleaning, diet preparation, enrichment creation, and guest engagement, learning about diverse animals such as California sea lions, African penguins, Asian small-clawed otters, Linneas’ two-toed sloths, and exotic avian species (Bird & Mammal Animal Care).
  • Following all OdySea Aquarium Zoological Standard Operating Procedures, including those that prohibit wearing of jewelry (Gallery Guide, Aquarist, and Bird & Mammal roles).
  • Proactively engaging guests in a friendly and courteous manner while upholding standards of excellence in guest experience.
  • Greeting and engaging guests, potentially speaking on a microphone.
  • Talking and hearing frequently.
  • Standing for long periods of time and walking.
  • Completing tasks in an environment that may be loud, wet, or humid.
  • Handling confidential information.
  • Standing for long periods of time, as well as walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or climbing.
  • Lifting 50 pounds and accessing animal pools, exhibits, and enclosures (Aquarist and Bird & Mammal roles only).
