About The Position

The Assistant Curator is an active participant in the development and maintenance of world-class exhibits and all operations for the aquarium and associated facilities. Daily responsibilities may include the care of a variety of animals including marine fish, assorted rays, tortoises, and other invertebrates. Operational responsibilities involve a unique merger of zoological and guest service excellence. Specific duties include, but are not limited to procurement, aquarium maintenance, SCUBA diving, safety and supervision of aquarium team, water chemistry, LSS maintenance, and customer service. In addition to animal and exhibit care, this position must possess high business acumen, demonstrate strong leadership capability, exceptional customer service, and dedication to achieving the highest possible service standards in all they do. This role will assist the Curator in supervising a team of aquarists.

Requirements

  • 2-year degree from an accredited college or university in a natural science degree, or related discipline and 4 years’ experience in an aquarium environment and/or animal care positions.
  • 4-year degree from an accredited college or university in a natural science degree, or related discipline and 3 years’ experience in aquarium environments and/or animal care positions.
  • SCUBA Certification
  • Ability to attain lifeguard certification upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • At least 4 years’ experience in an aquarium or zoological setting
  • At least 2 years demonstrated experience in an interactive guest service setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using various software programs and computer hardware.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and achieving department goals, property goals, and company objectives.
  • Anticipate changing guest and animal needs and service requirements and integrate them into departmental operational plans.
  • Maintain facilities and exhibits in a professional, clean, and operationally ready condition.
  • Coordinate with support departments to ensure proper maintenance of marine life support systems and other technical systems.
  • Assist in developing operational standards, policies, and procedures for animal care, life support systems, exhibits, guest interaction, and safety.
  • Lead and participate in activities related to the inventory, care, training, and feeding of animals.
  • Verify accurate and consistent records for animal inventory, mortalities, and dispositions and prepare periodic departmental reports.
  • Conduct regular inspections of animal facilities to ensure sanitation standards are consistently maintained and report unusual changes in animal behavior.
  • Assist with animal health surveillance and medical treatment as required.
  • Support the implementation of new experiences and educational opportunities to enhance guest satisfaction and revenue.
  • Improve service quality by coaching and guiding associates to anticipate and respond to guest needs.
  • Review associate and guest satisfaction results and ensure corrective actions are implemented when necessary.
  • Identify developmental needs and coach, mentor, or support associates to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Communicate expectations and performance objectives clearly and encourage open dialogue and feedback.
