About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a dynamic Coordinator of Volunteer Services to lead and grow our volunteer programs. This key role oversees all aspects of volunteer engagement, including recruitment, training, supervision, placement, and recognition. The Coordinator also oversees the intake and distribution of donations that support our patients and programs. Working closely with departments across the hospital, the Coordinator will help identify meaningful volunteer roles that enhance patient care and hospital operations. The position also contributes to internal communications by creating posters, flyers, newsletters, and visual displays that strengthen connection and information-sharing within the hospital community.

Requirements

  • Understanding of the principles and practices of human resource management, including behavioral techniques, planning, forecasting, and organizational development
  • Familiarity with work simplification methods
  • Proficiency in preparing charts, graphs, and tables
  • Demonstrated skill in writing concisely, expressing ideas clearly, and presenting information in a logical sequence
  • Three years of full time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative or managerial experience in business administration, business management or public administration the major duties of which involved program management, program administration, program coordination, program planning and/or program analysis, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • A Bachelor's degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the-required experience.
  • A Graduate degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for the required experience.
  • A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead recruitment efforts and outreach activities to maintain a steady pipeline of volunteers for the hospital, including career exploration initiatives and partnerships with local schools, faith communities, and civic organizations
  • Screen, interview, schedule, and place volunteer applicants; host tours for visiting professionals and students and coordinate career exploration events with community schools
  • Deliver orientation and ongoing training to ensure volunteers understand and follow essential safety, infection control, and confidentiality practices
  • Cultivate an environment of appreciation and address concerns related to volunteer performance or service
  • Collaborate with staff to identify and design meaningful volunteer roles and build a network of supervisors prepared to support volunteers
  • Maintain consistent communication with volunteers and supervisors through phone calls, letters, and bi‑monthly newsletters
  • Establish performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of the volunteer program
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports
  • Represent the hospital at volunteer fairs and community events to promote volunteer opportunities
