About The Position

The Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs is seeking to hire an independent, highly organized, and detail-oriented VOLUNTEER SERVICES COORDINATOR I for the Chicago VA home located in Chicago, Illinois. This position will be responsible for a variety of services within the VA Home. Duties include writing job descriptions for assignments, assisting in planning and organizing programs, and coordinating and monitoring volunteer program performance. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college.
  • Requires six months of professional experience in volunteer services program management, community organization or a social science field.
  • Requires ability to pass a background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen and pre-employment physical.
  • Requires ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  • Requires ability acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.

  • Prefers working knowledge of principles and procedures in the development and utilization of community services in a volunteer services program.
  • Prefers working knowledge of methods of supervision, organization, and administration.
  • Prefers working knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel management and the learning process as they relate to the recruitment, selection, placement, training, and retention of volunteers.
  • Prefers the ability to operate a personal computer, utilize relevant software, and navigate social media.
  • Prefers the ability to participate in planning and organizing programs for utilizing volunteer workers.
  • Prefers the ability to carry out an informational program for securing public support of volunteer services.
  • Prefers the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff personnel, community leaders, and the public.
  • Requires the ability to present ideas accurately and effectively, orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the administration and coordination of the volunteer services program for the Chicago Veterans Home.
  • Participates in recruiting and interviewing potential volunteers to determine acceptance into the volunteer program.
  • Maintains a database of addresses, telephone numbers, events and hours served for individual and group activities.
  • Attends staff meetings which includes volunteers and activity and social service staff.
  • Plans and coordinates Annual Volunteer Recognition Program.
  • Transports members to approved community outings and special events to enhance volunteer procurement services.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned with are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
