About The Position

Under the supervision of the Executive Services Administrator, this position performs a variety of professional, technical and managerial duties related to volunteer services and recreational programs organized by the Metroparks. This position will work directly with park staff to understand the need for volunteers within the park system and then develop and execute plans for volunteer recruitment, management and reporting. This position will work directly with park staff and strategic partners to collaboratively plan, develop and implement assigned recreation programs, special recreation events and activities to meet the goals of the Metroparks. This position will establish and maintain relationships with partners and organizations for the execution of recreation programming for the Metroparks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, programming, business, marketing, communications, or similar field, or 8+ years of related service.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Five years of experience in event planning, recreational programming, volunteer management, or related field.
  • Knowledge of recreational programming principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices used in developing and carrying out a diversified volunteer program.
  • Knowledge and/or skill in a variety of computer software applications including spreadsheets and word processing software.
  • Willingness to learn new software such as RecTrac and others.
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement, and report on recreational programs and activities.
  • Ability to provide direction to other employees in the area of recreational programming and volunteer management.
  • Ability to speak effectively before large and small groups.
  • Ability to demonstrate problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with the public, outside agencies, other departments, and employees.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity and the ability to implement new initiatives.
  • May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.
  • Ability to perform essential duties.
  • Ten years of experience in a related field (for Level 10).

  • Knowledge and/or experience in swim lessons, aquatics management and/or lifeguarding preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate volunteer services and recreational programs.
  • Develop and execute plans for volunteer recruitment, management, and reporting.
  • Collaboratively plan, develop, and implement recreation programs, special events, and activities with park staff and strategic partners.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partners and organizations for recreation programming.
  • Supervise volunteers, seasonal, and part-time employees as assigned.
  • Assist in improving community-wide engagement with diverse populations.
  • Prioritize multiple projects and manage competing schedules.
  • Participate as a member of Metroparks employee committees to lead strategic and data-supported recreational programming and volunteer initiatives.
  • Create high-quality programming and partnerships.
  • Deliver oral and visual presentations.
  • Represent the Metroparks professionally.
  • Collaborate on writing and proofing reports, articles, and content for various communication channels.
  • Utilize the Metroparks registration platform (RecTrac) for program details, registrations, and reports.
  • Identify and report problems and contribute to their resolution.
  • Coordinate with Metroparks staff to understand volunteer needs and recruit volunteers.
  • Coordinate scout and other group volunteer projects.
  • Manage volunteer applications and waivers.
  • Manage incoming public and group volunteer requests and inquiries.
  • Develop marketing tools and strategies for volunteer recruitment.
  • Write articles and content for e-newsletters, social media, website/blog, and board reports.
  • Cultivate and manage a database of volunteer contacts.
  • Update and manage volunteer opportunity listings on external websites.
  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked, budget, and contact groups.
  • Gather feedback and share opportunities for improvement of volunteer processes.
  • Complete annual reporting of volunteer activities.
  • Maintain equitable non-monetary methods of recognizing and incentivizing volunteer activities.
  • Collect photos and videos of volunteer activities.
  • Lead, develop, plan, and implement assigned recreation programs, events, and activities.
  • Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with community organizations for recreation programming partnerships.
  • Use data and evaluations to guide recreational programming decisions.
  • Supervise the Metroparks’ “Everyone in the Pool” program.
  • Manage budgeting and evaluation of assigned recreation programs and events.
