About The Position

The Next Chapter Culinary Training Program is dedicated to teaching skills that will aid in obtaining and retaining a paid position of regular employment outside of MHCD. Upon successful completion of the program, you will have gained an understanding of how to work in a professional work environment using the medium of culinary arts. Specific learning objectives and skills include, but are not limited to: Time Management & Organization, Communication & Problem Solving, Coping Mechanisms & Confidence, Cleanliness & Attention to detail, Creativity & Decision Making, and Accountability & Teamwork. All ServSafe materials will be provided by a culinary supervisor, and the class will be held weekly. It is the goal of the culinary program to have the individual obtain their ServSafe Food Handlers’ certificate at minimum, with the opportunity to learn the ServSafe Managerial material. Monthly evaluations are initiated by the student or scheduled by a supervisor to demonstrate knowledge gained and progress. Students are expected to call in at least 2 hours before their shift to inform of absence/tardiness. Schedule requests must be made at least one week in advance. Participation is necessary for individual growth, and supervisors encourage learning from mistakes. Behavioral skills and situational awareness will better prepare the individual for a paid position of regular employment outside of MHCD.

Responsibilities

  • Gain basic and technical culinary skills in a commercial kitchen serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Manage various tasks in a commercial food production kitchen.
  • Interpret weights and measurements and execute standard recipe conversions.
  • Gain knowledge and training in back-of-the-house (kitchen), front-of-the-house (dining), and serving meals.
  • Develop time management and organizational skills.
  • Improve communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Build coping mechanisms and confidence in handling stressful environments.
  • Practice cleanliness and attention to detail in kitchen safety and sanitation.
  • Explore creativity and decision-making through food.
  • Understand accountability and teamwork, contributing to mutual prosperity.
  • Participate in ServSafe training and aim to obtain ServSafe Food Handlers’ certificate.
  • Attend monthly evaluations to demonstrate knowledge and progress.
  • Adhere to attendance and tardiness policies.
  • Submit schedule requests at least one week in advance.
  • Actively participate in the program for personal growth and preparation for employment.
