DASCH helps people with intellectual disabilities in Winnipeg to reach their full potential, collaborating with families and allied professionals to support youth and adults in living, working, playing, and thriving in an inclusive, accessible, and responsive environment. The organization aims to build an inclusive community that values people with intellectual disabilities, supporting individuals in over 50 homes and providing access to recreational and life skills development. The DASCHWorks program offers support for employment, financial stability, and independence, complemented by specialized professionals in areas like life skills, behaviour management, nutrition, and mental health. Under the direction of the Manager of DASCHWorks & Day Programs, the Vocational Supports Supervisor oversees and delivers vocational and employment supports for people with intellectual disabilities. The goal is to help individuals develop vocational skills, obtain competitive community employment, and maintain it over time. This role involves day-to-day leadership and supervision of staff providing vocational facilitation and employment services, and direct collaboration with employers and stakeholders to promote inclusive hiring and strong employment outcomes.

Requirements

  • Working understanding of the needs of people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Experience in task analysis, instructional methods/design/modifications, group facilitation, and evaluation techniques.
  • Minimum supervisory/leadership experience is required.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies (employment/client marketing strategies).
  • Excellent written/oral communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain accurate records and reports as required (including program/government reporting).
  • Proficiency in computer use and ability to maintain appropriate online systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment; patience and ability to listen non-judgmentally.
  • Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License (full or intermediate) with access to a vehicle is required.
  • Satisfactory background checks, including a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search, Adult Abuse Registry check and Child Abuse Registry check (within three months of applying).
  • Employment references.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee implementation of the vocational/employment program, including adherence to program expectations, tracking outcomes, and managing program inventory.
  • Ensure people we support are assisted in the acquisition of vocational skills to obtain and maintain competitive employment in the community.
  • Maintain accurate records of persons’ progress/outcomes; upload to and maintain appropriate online systems.
  • Complete audits, checks, drills, and reports as required for the program.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and supervision to the team delivering employment and vocational supports (including supervision/monitoring of Vocational Facilitators).
  • Supervise, motivate, and monitor staff performance; develop positive relationships and provide guidance/support to staff when working with clients.
  • Complete and document required training for new employees; serve as a positive role model for staff.
  • Provide leadership to create a respectful working environment conducive to effective working relationships.
  • Complete job analysis to identify job duties and consider workplace culture.
  • Develop a specific Success Plan / employment action planning to support positive employment outcomes.
  • Source potential employers and employment opportunities; advocate with employers on behalf of prospective employees.
  • Collaborate with employer HR teams and advise on inclusive hiring practices and inclusive workplace best practices.
  • Support development of natural supports at the work site and provide ongoing support to help people we support maintain employment and address workplace challenges.
  • Systematically train employment candidates to perform job duties (quality/timeliness); coordinate transition to independent employment.
  • Create and maintain a follow-up structure for those in employment.
  • Provide individual emotional, physical, social, and vocational supports in a respectful and caring manner.
  • Conduct vocational assessments and interest testing; assess aptitudes, stamina, skill areas; observe and assess onsite task execution and work-related behaviours.
  • Support development of pre-employment and employment skills through one-to-one supports and group facilitation; assist with employment goals and action plans and seeking competitive employment.
  • Provide job coaching and individualized follow-up; provide community-based support and workplace assessments as required (including accompanying people to interviews or supporting transit training to workplaces).
  • Identify learning barriers and determine effective training/support methods; recommend assistive devices/equipment and community resources to enhance employment outcomes.
  • Promote independence and decision-making through respect for each person’s interests and choices.
  • Act as liaison with clients/people we support, families, DASCH programs, government, external stakeholders, employers, and the community.
  • Work closely with the personal support team to support successful employment.
  • Provide regular updates to relevant stakeholders; prepare and submit monthly reports on department progress; complete administrative duties including incident reports and required reporting (including government reporting as applicable).
  • Use Non-Violent Crisis Intervention techniques should an escalated situation arise.
  • Be familiar with fire safety procedures, emergency exits, and individual evacuation procedures.
  • Perform other duties assigned within the parameters of the role.
