About The Position

This position is for a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor 1/2/3 within the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). The role involves providing vocational rehabilitation counseling to consumers with disabilities to assist them in obtaining and maintaining competitive, integrated employment. This includes actively working with employers to develop relationships and create employment opportunities for DVR consumers. The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) helps Alaskans with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment, with a mission centered on the principle that employment equals empowerment. This position is essential and progression through the counseling series is expected. Obtaining and/or maintaining a Certification in Rehabilitation Counseling (CRC) is required and supported by the Division.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college (for Level 1).
  • Competencies in Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving, Oral and Written Communication, Continual Learning, Interpersonal Skills, and Social Services (for Level 1).
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college in vocational rehabilitation, counseling psychology, social work, guidance counseling, special education, or a related discipline as defined by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) (for Level 2).
  • Certification in Rehabilitation Counseling (CRC) from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (for Level 3).
  • Must meet Alaska Residency Requirements.
  • Legal right to accept employment in the United States.

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders (Psychology).
  • Excellent customer service skills, assessing needs, providing information, resolving problems, and satisfying expectations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, showing understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness; developing and maintaining effective relationships.

  • Experience providing direct social assistance services to individuals with disabilities, guidance counseling, pre-employment services, job placement services, social work, mental or behavioral health services, or related field (equivalent for Level 1).
