About The Position

The City of Boca Raton offers a paid Vocational Apprenticeship Program designed to provide individuals with practical on-the-job work experience, equipping them with the skills needed for a career in a trade. This program also serves as a potential recruitment pool for future permanent City employees. Apprenticeships are offered based on departmental needs and provide challenging and meaningful tasks. All apprentices receive an hourly wage for hours worked. These are part-time positions, and apprentices are considered unclassified employees, ineligible for benefits or additional compensation. Each apprentice is assigned a Department Coordinator for supervision and evaluation.

Requirements

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • High school graduate or equivalent (e.g., GED, technical vocational education/training).
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
  • Basic knowledge and training in one or more of the following areas: Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Welding, Machining, Carpentry, Construction, Instrumentation, Computer Repair & Programming.
  • Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year prior to date of hire, and shall abstain from the use of tobacco products at all times during employment with the City while both on and off duty.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, noise, etc.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protection equipment.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or a technical vocational school supported by technical training in instrumentation, electrical or electronics and at least six (6) months experience in installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of instrumentation and/or electronic equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all City safety policies and procedures.
  • Attend all required on-the-job safety and technical training programs relevant to the job.
  • Follow City timekeeping procedures and report to work promptly.
  • Wear proper attire in accordance with City personnel rules and regulations.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Clock in and out each day and manage schedule with the assigned Departmental Apprenticeship Coordinator.
  • Complete an online application form.
  • Complete required testing, if applicable.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Fulfill any pre-requisite OSHA or other mandated training, if applicable.
  • Be available for an in-person interview (over-the-phone interviews may be arranged).
  • Work part-time, no more than 25 hours per week (or an average of 25 hours per week over a one-year period).
  • Attend a mandatory orientation session and required training sessions.
  • Adhere to all City and Department policies.
  • Follow Department directives and complete assignments timely and satisfactorily.
  • Take part in Goal Setting, Performance Evaluation(s) sessions, and an Exit Interview with Human Resources.
