About The Position

The City of Boca Raton has established a paid Vocational Apprenticeship Program designed to provide practical on-the-job work experience to individuals interested in learning a trade and building a career. This program also serves as a potential recruitment pool for future permanent City employees. Apprenticeships are offered based on departmental needs and provide challenging and meaningful tasks. All apprentices receive an hourly wage for hours worked. These are part-time positions, and apprentices are considered unclassified employees, ineligible for any additional benefits or compensation beyond their hourly wage. Each apprentice is assigned a Department Coordinator for supervision and evaluation.

Requirements

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • High school graduate or have achieved the equivalent of a high school diploma or some technical vocational education/training.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Graduation from High School or attending an accredited Technical Vocational School or Community College will supplement this requirement.
  • Available to work Monday thru Friday between 7:00 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Good moral character.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Able to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Able to work well with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry or push 50 pounds.
  • Possession of valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
  • Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year prior to date of hire, and shall abstain from the use of tobacco products at all times during the period of their employment with the City while both on and off duty.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, noise and etc.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protection equipment.
  • Minimum commitment of six (6) months, preferably one (1) year.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or technical vocational trade school and at least six (6) months of documented experience in electrical installation work.

Nice To Haves

  • A desire to pursue a career in municipal government.
  • Have some basic knowledge and training in any of the following areas: Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Welding, Machining, Carpentry, Construction, Instrumentation, Computer Repair & Programming.

Responsibilities

  • Complete an online application form.
  • Complete required testing, if applicable.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Fulfill any pre-requisite OSHA or other mandated training, if applicable.
  • Be available for an in-person interview (over-the-phone interviews may be arranged).
  • Work part-time, but no more than 25 hours per week (or an average of 25 hours per week over a one-year period).
  • Attend a mandatory orientation session and required training sessions.
  • Adhere to all City and Department policies.
  • Follow Department directives and complete assignments timely and at least in a satisfactory manner.
  • Take part in Goal Setting, Performance Evaluation(s) sessions and an Exit Interview with Human Resources.
  • Follow all City safety policies and procedures.
  • Attend all required on the job safety and technical training programs as it pertains to the job.
  • Follow the City timekeeping procedures and report to work in a timely prompt manner.
  • Wear proper attire while working in accordance with the City of Boca Raton's personnel rules and regulations policy.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Conduct him/herself in a professional manner.
  • Clock in and out each day and manage schedule with assigned Departmental Apprenticeship Coordinator.
