About The Position

The Visual Field Technician (VFT) is primarily responsible for assisting providers by gathering data and performing tests relating to the patient’s visual field. This position maintains an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient and high quality eye care.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
BLS (Basic Life Support) only from the American Heart Association
0-1 years of relevant work experience
Performs basic computer skills.
Works well with patients of all age groups.
Presents with a professional appearance.
Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.
Works independently and in a collaborative environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

Determines the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the lensometer or autolensometer.
Performs the following test procedures on patients of all ages: Confrontation fields, Humphrey visual fields, Virtual reality visual fields (VRVF), Tangent screen visual fields, Amsler grid, Insertion and removal of hard and soft contact lenses, Administration of eye drops, Auto refraction.
Educates patients on testing procedures.
Monitors the progress and facilitates the testing of patients undergoing diagnostic testing and/or consultations in other areas/departments.
Serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, and other departments.
Provides patient-centric care.
Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, and values.
Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
Presents a professional appearance.
Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
Completes University of Miami mandatory in-services and online training.
Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
Meets daily productivity goals.
Ensures all equipment is calibrated, and instrumentation is in proper working order.
Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
Works evenings and weekends as needed.
Performs organizational duties as assigned.
Makes suggestions to Physicians and/or Practice Managers regarding possible improvements in the practice.
Handles medical emergencies in adherence to hospital policy in a timely and competent manner while putting the patient’s safety and well-being first.
