The Science desk at The New York Times is seeking a creative and ambitious editor to lead visual journalism, aiming to help people understand science in compelling and surprising ways. This role is part of the desk’s leadership group, responsible for setting news and enterprise goals and realizing ambitions. The editor will coach and manage journalists, partnering with the Times’s visual journalists to create engaging projects that leverage text, video, graphics, photography, or a mix of forms. The ideal candidate is a capable editor of text and visuals, comfortable with the technical complexity of modern digital publishing. They will oversee lines of coverage or individual stories, helping to select, assign, and edit news, features, and enterprise with a focus on making the report more visual. This position involves working with reporters and collaborating with visual departments to facilitate various coverage forms. It is an in-office position based in New York, requiring regular attendance four days each week, with some potential flexibility for remote work based on departmental guidance.
