About The Position

Reporting to the Head of Editorial, the Deputy Editor will oversee top-editing of Reader’s Digest’s flagship magazine, collaboratively drive cross-surface content projects, liaise with marketing and advertising on branded/native content initiatives and partner with the Head of Editorial, Deputy Digital editor and Social Lead to create content experiences that move the brand forward. As Reader’s Digest evolves, we’re looking for a candidate that balances creativity, rigor and resourcefulness.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or Communications.
  • 10+ years of experience in editorial roles, with a lead-by-example mindset.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive cross-functional relationships and driving big projects to launch.
  • Experience copy editing and/or top editing reported stories for a trusted journalistic outlet.
  • An organized, thorough and deadline-oriented approach to working with an ability to recognize when a content product or experience is ready to move forward.
  • Experience with content production tools such as InCopy/InDesign, as well as using analytics reports from platforms such as Google Analytics to measure the impact of content.
  • Experience in the realm of video and social content production.
  • An understanding of the workback and editing needs for custom shoots.
  • Deep background in editing and comfortable working with writers and editors at all levels.
  • Ability to get deep into reported and first-person copy in print, on digital surfaces and on social.
  • Demonstrated experience finding the synergy between strong editorial storytelling and market needs to create content that drives cross-surface success.
  • Interest in what’s happening in the world and how to provide the right stories to our audience in valuable, relevant and entertaining ways.
  • Deeply curious, a reader, watcher and consumer of content, enabling ability to spot opportunities and trends.
  • Willingness to take calculated risks.
  • Deadlines matter.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee top-editing of Reader’s Digest’s flagship magazine.
  • Collaboratively drive cross-surface content projects.
  • Liaise with marketing and advertising on branded/native content initiatives.
  • Partner with the Head of Editorial, Deputy Digital editor and Social Lead to create content experiences that move the brand forward.
  • Steer the print magazine, top-editing all copy and working with various Editorial Operations teams to ensure timely delivery of files to the printer.
  • Leverage own skills as a writer and editor — from display copy to reporting.
  • Assign freelance writing assignments and mentor and collaborate with other editors.
  • Liaise with the ad and marketing teams to generate creative ideas for partnership opportunities and ensure that all branded and native content feels true to the standards and style of Reader’s Digest editorial.
  • Collaborate with Reader’s Digest’s Art and Creative teams on feature concepts and cross-surface executions.
  • Drive and coordinate brand-wide franchise projects and events, in collaboration with the Head of Editorial.
