The visiting student will contribute to constructing and operating an instrument that continuously reloads individual ytterbium atoms into an optical tweezer array strongly coupled to an optical cavity. Together with a similar instrument at the University of Chicago, the instrument will be used to establish long-distance entanglement between ytterbium atoms and conduct proof-of-principle measurements. These measurements will use ytterbium’s optical clock transition to probe quantum-mechanical effects arising from gravitational shifts of the clock transition in curved space-time. This work is part of the Q-NEXT center. The position is classified as a Visiting Student Graduate role and is a part-time contingent-worker appointment scheduled for 20 hours per week. Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited institution and be at least 18 years old when the appointment begins.
