About The Position

The position will entail supporting the establishment of the Argonne-side laboratory for an image-guided, self-driving robot platform. Responsibilities at Argonne include: Assisting with lab setup, including installation and commissioning of characterization instruments Integrating and interfacing characterization tools with the autonomous robot software system (data, orchestration, AI/ML) developed at the home institution Supporting hardware-software integration and instrument control development on-site Collaborating with the Argonne research team and participating in meetings, discussions, and presentations with stakeholders Gaining domain knowledge in new materials for microelectronics.

Requirements

  • Background in computer science, computer engineering, materials science, or a related field (currently pursuing or recently completed degree, adjust to your level)
  • Strong software development skills, particularly in Python, with experience designing and building multi-component software systems
  • Experience with laboratory automation, instrument control, and hardware-software interfacing (e.g., serial/USB/network communication, device drivers, APIs)
  • Familiarity with AI/ML methods and integrating models into software pipelines
  • Experience with data management and workflow orchestration for scientific or experimental data
  • Systems administration experience (Linux environments, collaboration and version control tools such as Git)
  • Hands-on laboratory experience, including setup, commissioning, or operation of experimental and characterization instruments
  • Strong communication skills with experience presenting to technical audiences and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
  • The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States.
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution.
  • Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or
  • Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
