About The Position

The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society at The Ohio State University is seeking up to three Visiting Scholars of Civic Thought for the 2027–2028 academic year. This is a nationwide search for excellent scholars in disciplines relevant to civic thought, with a particular interest in candidates with expertise in natural law, civic leadership, and artificial intelligence and civics. The Visiting Scholar will be responsible for teaching, publishing research, and contributing to their academic discipline in a manner that aligns with the Center's mission. They will also be actively engaged in the intellectual life of the Center and the University. The Chase Center may consider Visiting Scholars for permanent positions. One specific Visiting Scholar position, funded by a gift, will focus on a scholar whose work has implications for free speech or academic freedom. This individual will be expected to give a lecture, teach a course, research and publish on free speech or related concepts, and help organize the Center's annual conference on civic thought. The faculty at the Chase Center are public-spirited scholars dedicated to fostering an academic community where civic life and intellectual pursuits flourish. They are expected to advance the Center's mission through meaningful contributions to their disciplines, teaching and mentoring students, modeling collegiality, and serving the University and the broader Ohio community. All members of the Center are expected to be familiar with and embrace the Center's mission as defined by ORC § 3335.39. Salary and benefits are competitive.

Requirements

A Ph.D., J.D., or other terminal degree in a field related to the Center’s mission.
Record of publishing high-quality and impactful scholarship in prestigious academic outlets in the faculty member’s discipline, as well as other academic and popular outlets.
Record of effectively teaching undergraduate courses that will advance the Center’s mission.
Cover letter describing how the candidate meets the qualifications for the position, including his or her commitment to the Center’s mission and an explanation of how the candidate is prepared to support that mission through teaching (including courses the candidate might teach), research, and contributions to the Center’s institutional development.
