About The Position

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking a Visiting Scholar to support the Monetary and Capital Markets Department's (MCM) work on debt-for-climate swaps and adaptation investment issues. This role involves providing analytical support, particularly in modeling the implications of climate shocks on financial stability within a small open economy framework. The scholar will contribute to model development, guide empirical analysis, and provide feedback on internal memos and working papers focused on policy questions related to sustainable financing and climate-related financial risks. The position is contractual and based within the MCM Surveillance & Review Division.

Requirements

  • Experience in modeling debt-for-climate swaps and adaptation investment issues.
  • Knowledge of implications for financial stability.
  • Expertise in modeling aspects considering a small open economy vulnerable to climate shocks.
  • Understanding of the realistic and stochastic nature of climate shocks.
  • Ability to provide input and guidance on model development.
  • Skills to guide empirical analysis.
  • Ability to provide feedback and suggestions on internal memos and working papers.
  • Experience in developing dynamic stochastic models with a full-fledged financial sector.
  • Understanding of the interplay between disaster-induced financing and debt sustainability.
  • Knowledge of financial stability implications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to MCM's work on debt-for-climate swap and adaptation investment issues and their implications for financial stability.
  • Contribute to the modeling aspects of these issues, considering a small open economy vulnerable to climate shocks.
  • Provide input and guidance on model development.
  • Guide how theoretical work can inform empirical analysis.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions on internal memos and working papers focusing on policy questions related to sustainable financing and financial stability.
  • Work on the implementation of the analytical agenda of the Surveillance and Review Division related to the IMF’s view on sustainable financing and their implication for financial stability from both modeling and empirical standpoints.
  • Help develop a dynamic stochastic model with a full-fledged financial sector to study the interplay between disaster-induced financing and debt sustainability along with their financial stability implications.
  • Ensure the framework allows for in-depth analysis of debt-for-climate swaps.
  • Inform the Fund's work on maintaining sovereign creditworthiness while building capacity to cope with climate disasters.
  • Understand the extent to which financial markets dynamically internalize climate risks into their pricing of financial instruments.
