About The Position

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Memphis seeks candidates for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Earth Sciences. This is a nine-month appointment for the 2026-2027 academic year. The successful candidate will teach up to three sections per semester, primarily introductory undergraduate courses. The department offers seven introductory general education courses covering topics such as weather and climate, landforms, physical geology, the earth through time, the human planet, survey of world regions, and cultural geography. The visiting assistant professor will be part of an interdisciplinary program with degree concentrations in geoarchaeology, geography, geology, and environmental sciences. The University of Memphis is a public research university with a strong commitment to its urban mission, serving approximately 22,000 students.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate level to include introductory courses.
  • Commitment to undergraduate teaching.
  • Commitment to working in a collegial, collaborative, and interdisciplinary environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching geography courses.
  • PhD in an Earth Science related field.
  • ABD applicants will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Teach as many as three sections each semester, most of which will be at the introductory undergraduate level.
