About The Position

The Knowlton Landscape Architecture Section at Ohio State University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position. This one-year or two-year appointment offers an opportunity for an emerging or established scholars, designers, and practitioners to contribute to the school’s intellectual environment. The role is intended for scholars engaged in emergent discourse in landscape architecture, and in scholars with demonstrated alignment with the section’s curricular areas of landscape architecture history and design studios. The appointment would begin in August 2026 for the 2026-27 academic year. We welcome applicants from diverse areas of expertise within and adjacent to landscape architecture, including but not limited to design, history and theory, ecology, environmental performance, and urbanism. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching agendas will enhance the breadth and depth of the Knowlton School’s faculty and pedagogy. Previous Visting Professors have examined emerging forestry and nursery practices, transformational urban design and planning for rust belt cities, novel methodologies for urban soils, and visual techniques for documenting forest ecologies through time. Situated within a major research university with state-of-the-art facilities, the Knowlton School is a site for critical inquiry. A strong design culture and pioneering work with technology—intertwining aesthetic explorations with questions of social and environmental importance—form the core of our educational mission. Our school and the university are vital parts of a growing city and metropolitan area of over two million people. The successful applicant will be given one or two 9-month appointments over one or two consecutive academic years and will also be appointed as a Midwest Landscape Lab Research Fellow. During this period, the visiting professor would be expected to develop a research project. The project should contribute to the culture of the Knowlton School and the discipline of landscape architecture. During the appointment, the Visiting Assistant Professor will be given the time and resources to advance their research in the following ways: by preparing a public exhibition and delivering a public lecture related to the research project; by teaching related studios and seminars; and, by organizing events such as symposia and workshops.
