About The Position

Wingate University is seeking to hire a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology to begin in August 2026. This teaching-focused role involves primarily teaching undergraduate sociology courses, many of which also fulfill requirements for the bachelor of science in public health (BSPH) degree. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development and assessment, advise and mentor students, and foster an inclusive and equitable classroom environment. Opportunities to teach graduate courses may also be available based on expertise. The position requires balancing teaching 4 courses (12 credit hours) per semester with research and service engagement, including student advising, departmental duties, and committee service within the university's shared governance structure. A commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and evidence of scholarly potential are preferred. Recent graduates and ABD applicants are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • PhD in Sociology, MS required
  • Experience teaching Introduction to Sociology and/or advanced Sociology courses
  • Experience with face-to-face delivery of courses is preferred
  • Evidence of scholarly potential
  • Ability to balance excellence in teaching 4 courses (12 credit hours) per semester with research and service engagement
  • Team-oriented
  • Foster an inclusive and equitable classroom
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching foundational courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and/or Research Methods
  • Experience or interest in teaching courses such as Gender Roles in Society, Social Inequalities, Medical Sociology, Gender and Health, Sociology of Death and Dying, and Social Epidemiology courses
  • Experience or interest in teaching courses that count towards the BSPH degree and/or minors in medical sociology and women and gender studies
  • Graduate course teaching opportunities based on expertise
