The Bates College Economics Department is seeking two one-year visiting assistant professors to begin in July 2026. These positions require candidates to balance research in their specialization with teaching responsibilities. Successful candidates will teach intermediate microeconomic theory (with calculus) or statistics (using Stata), along with electives in their areas of expertise. A key aspect of the role involves mentoring undergraduate research. While all subfields of microeconomics are considered, the department has a preference for candidates with expertise in health economics, public economics, labor economics, and economic history. The college particularly encourages applications from candidates with a proven track record of working with underrepresented and marginalized populations. The teaching load is five courses per academic year. Responsibilities are primarily focused on teaching and student mentorship during the appointment term. Advising and student supervision will be limited to thesis supervision within the candidate's primary field of expertise. Visiting assistant professors are generally not assigned ongoing administrative or committee duties, unless specifically negotiated with the Dean of Faculty or Associate Deans. They are expected to attend relevant faculty and departmental meetings concerning teaching and to participate actively in the department's academic life. The Economics Department at Bates is characterized by its active community of faculty and students dedicated to an economics education that integrates theory with empirical analysis. The department strongly values research as essential for effective teaching, as evidenced by faculty research achievements, an external seminar series, and an internal brown bag series. Economics is a highly popular major at Bates College.
