About The Position

Western Washington University's Department of Environmental Sciences is seeking a 9-month Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year September 16, 2026, through June 15, 2027. The position requires a demonstrated ability to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, with all areas of specialization considered. The department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in General Ecology, Environmental Disturbances, Watershed Biogeochemistry, Environmental Sampling, Plant and Soil Interactions, and Biostatistics (r-based). The role includes teaching six courses per year on a 10-week quarter system, advising students on course selections, and mentoring undergraduate thesis projects. A key responsibility is to fulfill teaching and mentoring duties in a way that fosters equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students.

Requirements

  • PhD or ABD in environmental science or a closely related field at the time of application.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach courses in one or more of the following: General Ecology, Watershed Biogeochemistry, Biostatistics, and Plant and Soil Interactions.
  • Commitment to advising and mentoring undergraduate students.

  • Post Doctoral Fellowship or additional professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses.

  • Teach additional lab and field-based classes within the candidate’s area of expertise.
  • Advise students on course choices.

  • Fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students.
