About The Position

The Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (REGSS) Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire seeks to hire a Visiting Assistant Professor in Critical Hmong Studies. This two-year position begins on August 13, 2027. The position may be extended to a third year. We seek applicants whose research interests, qualifications, and/or experience relate to one or more of the following: Commitment to an intersectional approach to Hmong and Hmong American issues, especially as they relate to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, social class, indigeneity and decolonization, disability, etc. Interest in the educational development and mentoring of Critical Hmong Studies students and students from affiliated organizations on campus.

Requirements

• Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Asian American Studies, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, Education Studies, History, Sociology, or other closely related field; or MFA in writing, visual art, multimedia arts, and/or performing arts.
• ABD candidates will be considered if the doctorate is complete before the start of the contract.
• Excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Nice To Haves

• Ability to communicate in Hmong and/or teach Hmong language courses.
• Interest in doing outreach and working with Hmong American communities at the university and surrounding region.
• Interest in leading immersion trips, domestic and international, related to Critical Hmong Studies.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance
• Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations
• Develops instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction
• The teaching load for this position includes 4 classes per semester totaling 12 credit hours.
• The successful candidate will teach Critical Hmong Studies courses in the REGSS department, such as: Hmong American Experiences in the U.S.; and Intersectionality: Critical Approaches to Identity and Injustice.
• The successful candidate will also teach courses in departments or programs based on disciplinary expertise (e.g., LGBTQ Studies, Art and Design, Sociology, Music and Theatre, Languages, History, Anthropology).
• There will also be opportunity to develop courses in Critical Hmong Studies.
• In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to do service work that builds community among Critical Hmong Studies students and related student organizations, as well as Hmong populations and organizations in the region.
