About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is hiring a Virtualization Platform Engineer to design, implement, and manage virtualization infrastructure supporting enterprise applications and services for the NNSA’s business services and programmatic missions. The role is within the Enterprise Infrastructure Services Division of the Computing Directorate and supports the NNSA Program. Full-time on-site presence is required. The position may be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level, depending on the candidate’s knowledge and related experience. The engineer designs, implements, and supports highly available VMware virtual infrastructure across private cloud environments. The role includes configuring and maintaining VMware clusters and their vCenter, ESXi, and vSAN components; automating service orchestration and infrastructure operations; collaborating with customers and technical teams; and supporting the full lifecycle of VMware systems, including architecture, risk analysis, capacity planning, implementation, upgrades, security compliance, vulnerability remediation, and performance monitoring. The engineer also provides day-to-day operational support across development, test, production, and disaster recovery environments and advises on VMware vSphere configuration within established architecture and security requirements. At the SES.3 level, the position additionally entails managing multiple advanced tasks and stakeholder priorities, applying advanced technical expertise to complex problems, developing automation and cross-platform monitoring tools and procedures, and leading the deployment and lifecycle management of cloud management platforms such as VMware Cloud Director/VMware Aria Suite and VMware Cloud Foundation.

  • Proficient experience automating VMware operations using PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, and Infrastructure as Code approaches for orchestration, configuration management, monitoring, and service delivery.
  • Broad knowledge and experience implementing VMware security, including authentication, role-based access control, certificates, hardening, vulnerability remediation, and compliance with NIST, DISA, SCAP, and STIG requirements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of VMware compute, storage, and network architectures, including SAN, NFS, iSCSI, vSAN, VDS, and VSS, across development, test, production, and disaster recovery environments.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate in a team environment and explain, present, and document technical information for management and customers.
  • At the SES.3 level, advanced knowledge and significant experience architecting and optimizing complex VMware environments, including vCenter, ESXi, vSAN, NSX, Aria, compute, storage, networking, clustering, high availability, disaster recovery, and multi-environment operations.
  • At the SES.3 level, advanced application and development experience creating automation and Infrastructure as Code solutions with PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, and related tools to orchestrate provisioning, configuration management, monitoring, patching, upgrades, and lifecycle operations.
  • At the SES.3 level, advanced knowledge and significant experience applying cybersecurity principles to VMware and supporting operating systems, including identity and access management, certificates, encryption, security baselines, vulnerability remediation, and compliance with NIST, DISA, SCAP, and STIG requirements.
