Virtualization Engineer

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

AMD’s Software and Solutions Team is seeking an experienced Virtualization Engineer to advance AMD’s virtualization and platform software ecosystem. The role combines hands-on work in Linux systems, hypervisors, and low-level platform software with contributions to technical execution and architectural direction. The engineer will work in complex virtualization environments and collaborate with AMD engineering teams, enterprise customers, OEMs, and operating-system partners on performance analysis, automation, debugging, and development. The role is a fast-paced, highly technical position with opportunities to influence platform direction and customer outcomes. The successful candidate will bring technical depth, ownership, organization, and clear communication. They will work across parallel efforts, navigate unfamiliar codebases, mentor engineers, provide architectural guidance, and engage with customers and partners to take problems from definition through resolution. The position is located in Santa Clara, California, or Austin, Texas, and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on experience with VMware VCF, vSphere/ESX, NSX, and other VMware products.
  • Strong VMware debugging skills, including at the system and hypervisor level.
  • Solid knowledge of x86_64 architecture and system-level performance concepts.
  • Proficiency in C, Python, and scripting for systems work, debugging, tooling, and automation.
  • Experience working directly with enterprise customers, OEMs, and OS partners to deliver virtualization solutions and platform enablement.
  • Experience building or maintaining automation frameworks for system software validation and performance or regression workflows.
  • Master’s degree preferred in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with virtualization software beyond VMware VCF, such as Nutanix AHV or KVM-based stacks.
  • Experience leading distributed engineering teams across time zones in an agile development environment.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

Responsibilities

  • Drive AMD platform and GPU enablement and readiness in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments, supporting internal validation and partner and customer adoption.
  • Partner with platform and firmware teams on hardware bring-up and triage issues involving firmware or BIOS settings and operating-system or hypervisor interactions.
  • Analyze, debug, and resolve complex VMware ESXi kernel- and system-level issues, driving root-cause analysis across platform software layers.
  • Validate platform software features in VMware deployments across hypervisor-facing functionality, platform integration, and system behavior under real workloads.
  • Deploy, debug, validate, and optimize VMware’s solution stack on AMD products.
  • Analyze, tune, and optimize VMware workload performance on AMD platforms; identify bottlenecks and deliver fixes or mitigations.
  • Publish performance results, tunings, and best practices in tuning guides, white papers, and other external-facing materials.
  • Build and maintain Python-based and other scripting or framework automation to improve validation coverage, debugging efficiency, performance triage, and platform reliability in VMware environments.
  • Work directly with enterprise customers, OEMs, and OS and virtualization partners to promote AMD CPU and GPU products, support pre-sales proofs of concept, triage escalations, drive root cause, and deliver solutions with clear communication and follow-through.
  • Collaborate with and mentor engineers across global AMD teams and help shape technical direction as a senior individual contributor.
