About The Position

The Tennessean, the state’s largest and most decorated news organization, is looking for a video-forward reporter to join our team’s breaking news desk. The successful candidate will work to quickly produce real-time dispatches from crime scenes, weather events and a wide variety of breaking news scenarios to keep our video-hungry audience abreast of the latest developments across our city. We are looking for a reporter who is versatile, nimble and able to operate as a one-person crew in Nashville’s highly competitive media market. Broadcast experience is a plus, as is comfort being on camera. The successful candidate will also have expertise in writing stories to accompany video reports that will appear across The Tennessean’s platforms. This reporter should be comfortable engaging on social media and in other digital communities, and developing sources to identify and inform stories. This reporter must love telling stories quickly when needed, in-depth when called for, and always with accuracy. Living in or recently have lived in Nashville or having familiarity with the state and interests of communities is a plus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • Expertise in creating and producing video content
  • Exeprience with social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and YouTube.
  • Command of concise writing, spelling, grammar, and AP style.
  • Good fact-checking and reporting skills.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Facility with AI and automation and experience in using it to enhance their journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor police scanners, emails, social media, community groups and other sources to find stories.
  • Monitor developing stories across news, social and other media platforms for key topics important to Missourians
  • Efficiently and accurately write stories, several per day.
  • Find, pitch and swiftly produce stories on topics of emerging interest, with a focus on what readers want and need to know.
  • Ensure content is properly optimized for competitive search ranking and best practices for user experience.
