Breaking News/General Assignment Reporter

About The Position

This role involves monitoring various sources to identify and report on breaking news within the Bay Area. The reporter will be responsible for publishing daily content, including over 12 articles per week, and identifying trends for in-depth reporting. The position requires attending business and company events to build sources and collaborating with colleagues. The reporter will also take on other assignments as directed by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Desire and ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources
  • Strong analytical and investigative-interviewing skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online
  • A clear drive to develop sources and build audience
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure.
  • Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors.
  • Proficient with MS Office Products
  • Proficient with Web-Based Communication Platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • Multimedia skills, including video, photos, broadcast, on-camera, helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Build familiarity with a variety of industries, companies, and newsmakers in the Bay Area.
  • Monitor both automated and cultivated human sources to identify breaking news.
  • Prioritize what is newsworthy in real time.
  • Cross-check facts to ensure accuracy, especially critical during fast-moving situations.
  • Distill complex developments into clear, digestible information.
  • Publish daily content, 12 plus articles per week.
  • Find trends in daily coverage that lead to in-depth reporting, scoops, exclusives and breaking news.
  • Attend business events to meet and identify sources.
  • Attend all required ACBJ events.
  • Take on any other assignment made by manager(s).
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all colleagues and sources.
