About The Position

Agilent Technologies is seeking a scientific and business leader to serve as Vice President of Research & Development within the Chemistries and Supplies Division (CSD). The role leads the global R&D organization and is accountable for technology strategy, the innovation portfolio, product development, and technical leadership supporting chromatography columns, sample preparation, and instrument supplies. The Vice President translates advances in separation science, materials, surface chemistry, particle technology, manufacturing science, and analytical workflows into differentiated products that address customer needs, while ensuring the innovation pipeline delivers scientific excellence, quality, speed, productivity, manufacturability, and commercial impact. As a senior member of the CSD leadership team, the Vice President partners with business, marketing, commercial, operations, quality, regulatory, legal, and corporate technology leaders. The role helps shape portfolio strategy, investment priorities, talent strategy, and long-range growth plans. It reports directly to the Vice President and General Manager, Chemistries and Supplies Division, with strategic alignment to Agilent’s Chief Technology Officer and regular engagement with senior leadership. The position is based onsite in Little Falls, Delaware, with global travel required (listed as 25% of the time). The schedule is full time, day shift, with no end date. The stated full-time-equivalent pay range is $280,000–$437,500 per year, with eligibility for bonus, stock, and benefits. Applications are accepted until at least October 30, 2026, or until the job is no longer posted.

Requirements

  • At least 15 years of progressive leadership experience in R&D, technology and/or product development, or a closely related function.
  • Experience managing a portfolio spanning research, new-product development, platform development, lifecycle programs, and technology-risk reduction.
  • Significant leadership experience in separation science, chromatography consumables, analytical technologies, life-science tools, advanced materials, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated success leading a sizable, global, multidisciplinary R&D organization through other senior leaders and implementing a strong talent-development program.
  • A record of developing and commercializing differentiated products or technology platforms that delivered measurable customer and business value.
  • Ability to make resource and investment tradeoffs across projects with varying time horizons, risk profiles, and commercial potential.
  • Strong executive communication skills and ability to influence senior leaders, technical experts, customers, and external partners.
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally as required; the posting lists travel at 25% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • A Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, polymer science, biochemistry, or a related scientific or engineering discipline is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Establish multi-year innovation strategies and technology roadmaps for the portfolio.
  • Own the quality, health, value, and execution of the new-product-development pipeline.
  • Direct investment across breakthrough innovation, platform development, and product extensions.
  • Integrate research, product development, manufacturing science, applications, quality, and commercialization.
  • Build the scientific capabilities, leadership capacity, organizational culture, and external networks required for long-term market leadership.
  • Contribute to the Chemistries and Supplies Division’s strategy, operating priorities, and performance as a senior leadership team member.
  • Translate divisional growth objectives into a focused R&D strategy that delivers meaningful differentiation.
  • Partner with business and functional leaders to assess market attractiveness, competitive differentiation, technical feasibility, investment needs, risk, and expected financial return.
  • Participate in annual operating and long-range strategic planning, portfolio reviews, capital allocation, workforce planning, and business-performance management.
  • Communicate R&D priorities, progress, risks, and investment choices to executive stakeholders.
  • Balance current-business needs with investment in future technology platforms and growth sources.
  • Bring an enterprise perspective to decisions, optimizing for Agilent and its customers rather than an individual function, technology, site, or product line.
  • Link technology investments to defined customer needs, differentiated value propositions, and commercially attractive opportunities, and incorporate customer insight throughout research, development, validation, and commercialization.
  • Build connections among R&D scientists, application experts, product managers, commercial teams, key opinion leaders, and strategic customers.
  • Create disciplined mechanisms to evaluate emerging technologies and determine whether to build internally, partner, license, or acquire.
  • Establish systematic learning from field performance, technical support, customer complaints, competitive evaluations, and application data.
  • Measure innovation effectiveness using indicators such as portfolio health, milestone performance, cycle time, launch quality, adoption, revenue, margin contribution, and R&D return.
  • Develop an intellectual-property strategy aligned with technology roadmaps, portfolio priorities, and competitive differentiation.
  • Recruit, develop, engage, and retain scientific, technical, and leadership talent, building succession for critical technical and people-leadership roles.
