About The Position

The Vice President of Transportation Claims leads the management of complex auto and general liability claims arising from the Company’s transportation operations. This role oversees both an internal team of risk professionals and a third-party claims administrator, balancing strategic leadership with hands-on management of the Company’s claims portfolio. The claims team partners closely with safety and operations to support best-in-class incident response, strengthen enterprise risk mitigation, and reinforce continuous improvement across the organization. As leader of the claims function, this role will monitor performance against established goals, identify opportunities to improve outcomes, and lead initiatives that advance operational effectiveness and risk reduction. The Vice President of Transportation Claims works closely with MV’s legal team and outside defense counsel to develop and execute case strategy from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal. The role requires experience managing complex, high-exposure matters and a proven ability to resolve cases effectively in mediation and trial settings. As a strategic partner to executive leadership, this role leads case review meetings with the C-suite and provides Board of Directors updates on industry trends, litigation matters, and case management. A successful candidate will bring executive presence, sound judgment, and the ability to influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of claims management experience, preferably in transportation, trucking, or a similarly complex operating environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead internal teams and manage external partners.
  • Experience developing claims policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols.
  • Proven success managing high-exposure liability matters and high-stakes negotiations.
  • Experience directing outside counsel and managing relationships with insurance carriers, brokers, and other claims stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of claims operations in transportation, trucking, transit, or similar operational industries.
  • Clear, persuasive written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and adapt while remaining agile and flexible.
  • Executive-level judgment, strategic thinking, and sound risk assessment.
  • Sophisticated negotiation, settlement strategy, and dispute-resolution leadership.
  • Ability to balance litigation strategy with commercial objectives.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, reserve analysis, and claims cash flow management.
  • Executive presence and credibility to advise C-suite leaders and Board-level stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an internal team of risk professionals responsible for claims handling and oversight.
  • Oversee a company-dedicated third-party administrator responsible for claims adjudication, payments, reporting, and service-level performance.
  • Manage a national docket of insurance defense matters, including bodily injury, property damage, catastrophic loss, and related commercial liability claims.
  • Partner with Legal to develop and execute case strategy from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal.
  • Lead mediations, high-stakes settlement negotiations, and trial oversight, as appropriate.
  • Strengthen reporting workflows and establish disciplined processes for coverage issues, reservations of rights, indemnity obligations, and allocation disputes.
  • Ensure clear communication and escalation protocols for management, insurance carriers, brokers, and other key stakeholders.
  • Evaluate liability exposure, damages modeling, settlement posture, and trial risk, and provide clear, business-oriented recommendations.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting for claims settlements and defense counsel spend.
  • Provide practical, business-focused guidance to Operations and Safety on claims prevention, incident handling, and risk mitigation.
  • Support significant incident response and investigation, including coordination with onsite response teams.
  • Develop and deliver claims-related training for field operations.
  • Track KPIs and identify systemic risk trends, recommending proactive mitigation measures.
