About The Position

Yusen Terminals LLC (“YTI”), based in Terminal Island (Los Angeles), CA, is wholly owned by Ocean Network Express (ONE), with office headquarters in Singapore. YTI operates a state-of-the-art marine container terminal in the Port of Los Angeles. YTI was established in 1991 at the Port’s Berths 212-218. The services we provide are stevedoring and terminal operations for The Alliance (ONE, Hapag Lloyd, HMM and Yang Ming) as well as slot chartering from Evergreen, CMA-CGM, APL, COSCO and OOCL. As a full-service marine terminal, YTI provides modern technology, equipment, on-dock rail, storage facilities and Alternative Maritime Power (AMP®). YTI’s highly experienced management team are devoted to efficient cargo handling with a focus on service delivery and customer satisfaction. We currently operate eleven Post Panamax Gantry cranes including six state-of-the-art Super Post Panamax Gantry cranes. Position Summary The Vice President is responsible for managing all operational aspects of YTI and will assist the CEO with the aggressive and successful growth of the company. He or she will provide the leadership and vision necessary to ensure proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and appropriate people systems to effectively grow the organization while ensuring financial strength and operating efficiency. The VP will have a respectful, constructive, and energetic style and be guided by the highest degree of integrity while focusing on the operational objectives of the company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Required.
  • 10+ years’ management experience in a maritime or manufacturing environment with at least 5 in a senior leadership role.
  • Proven experience evaluating, implementing, and utilizing technology and automation to improve processes and performance.
  • Be entrepreneurial, innovative, energetic, flexible, collaborative, and a proactive team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical operations initiatives.
  • Have excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Possess exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Serve effectively as a trusted member of the senior leadership team.
  • Have a proven track record facilitating progressive organizational change and development.
  • Have hands-on budget management skills including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.

  • Possess a hands-on management style and be adept at engaging and resolving day-to-day issues.

Responsibilities

  • All employees have the responsibility to plan and execute our work in ways that prevent injuries. It is an expectation we lead by example and require all employees to adhere to our safety procedures.
  • The VP oversees all company operational functions and will formulate, implement, and enhance all business strategies and operational processes.
  • Lead the Director of Operations in achieving the operational KPIs in safety, service, cost reduction and efficiency. The VP will also lead a Director of Labor Relations, and a General Manager of Continuous Improvement in advancing operational objectives.
  • Ensure complete alignment with Yusen Terminals’ safety program and instill a culture of compliance with all managers and labor.
  • Develop annual budget with assistance from Director of Operations.
  • Designs appropriate KPIs and metrics in conjunction with the Director Labor Relations and GM Continuous Improvement and implements these with the department managers to drive business results as needed.
  • Oversee Director of Operations. Actively identify potential, create personal development plans aligned with future company needs and mentor individuals.
  • Determine staffing requirements.
  • Implement robust performance management tools and procedures designed to effectively address personnel needs in close cooperation with the Director, Human Resources.
  • Establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures and hold all Director of Operations accountable for their direction of their personnel.
  • Implement new technologies including an advanced gate operating system and the initiative to integrate near-zero emissions terminal handling equipment to meet 2030 mandates.
  • Partner and collaborate with the Chief Commercial Officer on various customer initiatives to improve operating efficiencies while growing volumes, improving service, and increasing profitability.
  • Report operational results to the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis.
  • Support other members of the senior team in achieving business improvements in support of YTI’s overall strategy.
  • Evaluate and implement business improvements, processes, protocols, and policies that align with the organization’s values while fostering a high-performing culture of accountability.
  • Establish comprehensive and measurable individual and team goals.
  • Create a results-oriented culture where team members set, own, and achieve weekly and monthly performance commitments.
  • Develop 5-10 year strategic short and long-term operational goals and plans.
  • Be a motivator for employees by driving exceptional team performance and building a culture of urgency.
