About The Position

In collaboration with Executive Management, the Vice President for Development will provide leadership, strategy, and management of all fundraising across Housing Works and Bailey House. This role is responsible for maintaining and increasing charitable giving to both agencies using proven and innovative fundraising methodologies, including direct mail, major gifts, events, campaigns, and donor stewardship, while overseeing a team of fundraising professionals. Working closely and collaboratively with Senior Leadership and the Board of Directors, the Vice President will play a critical role in advancing Housing Works' mission by growing and broadening its fundraising program, furthering the organization's strategic goals, and achieving and surpassing budget goals.

Requirements

  • BA/BS required.
  • At least ten years of proven leadership experience in non-profit development.
  • Proven success meeting and exceeding fundraising and budget goals.
  • Strong experience with major gifts, annual giving, donor stewardship, events, campaigns, and corporate sponsorships.
  • Experience managing and developing fundraising staff, consultants, and volunteer leadership.
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors, senior staff, donors, corporate sponsors, and community partners.
  • Passion for the mission of Housing Works and the ability to serve effectively as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Exceptional computer software skills, including Microsoft Office and working familiarity with Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or similar donor management systems.
  • Experience with and proven commitment to working with low-income and marginalized communities and individuals with multiple chronic medical conditions.
  • Demonstrated talent and skill in recruiting, managing, inspiring, and growing a diverse workforce and building collaborative teams to meet and exceed performance and budget goals.
  • Strong strategic program planning, proposal writing, goal setting, and performance management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong relationships with Board members, volunteers, donors, and senior staff.
  • Proven ability to think critically, exercise good judgment, and work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills; exceptional written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Familiarity with the New York market, especially fashion and/or design.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall vision and leadership for Development activities for Housing Works and Bailey House (and other companies, as needed).
  • Develop and implement strategies and deploy staff and resources to reach and surpass annual fundraising goals and grow the annual giving program by 20% over three years.
  • In close collaboration with the COO, CEO/President, and boards, develop and implement strategies to attract, retain, and steward major donors ($10K and above).
  • Set up and maintain Giving Clubs to recognize donors, drive engagement, increase financial contributions, and develop major donor naming opportunities.
  • Train current leaders, board members, and new/existing staff to be effective fundraisers; identify new leadership.
  • Ensure efficacy of data tools (Salesforce) to track donors and identify new sources of support; produce dashboards and share data with staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Maintain and expand the list of major donor prospects, including young donors.
  • Coordinate with Advocacy to develop rapid response fundraising opportunities.
  • Consult and collaborate with Executive Leadership to draft and implement annual and mid-year agency budgets.
  • Participate in board and other leadership meetings to develop agenda items, materials, and other content, as requested by the COO and/or President of Housing Works.
  • Provide event leadership and guidance for event staff and volunteers, including chairs and co-chairs; develop new, innovative ways to improve revenue.
  • Develop and test new fundraising vehicles, including events and campaigns, and quickly build on successful test efforts.
  • Participate in Housing Works public policy advocacy activities and efforts.
  • Help shape and define a culture of philanthropy within the organization.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Housing Works and the preferred outward-facing executive working with donors and prospects.
  • Maintain regular, consistent, and transparent progress reports to key stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Manage and develop a team of 4 development professionals and numerous consultants.
  • Attend and manage key design and fashion events; ensure relationships with appropriate sponsors and prospects.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with board members, event leadership, individual donors, and corporate sponsor prospects.
  • Develop initiatives and charitable giving programs and communicate new donor and fund development results to the Boards, senior staff, donors, and the general community.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to deliver presentations to boards, agencies, professional and civic organizations regarding Housing Works and Bailey House.
  • Serve as an external spokesperson for the organization with a focus on charitable giving and the state of nonprofit philanthropy and serve as a source of wisdom both internally and externally.
  • Participate in Housing Works advocacy activities and efforts.
  • Attend donor meetings, appointments, conferences, and fundraising/community events.
  • Represent Housing Works and Bailey House externally with donors, sponsors, board members, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Executive Leadership.
