The Vice Dean for Finance and Administration serves as the School of Medicine’s chief business officer and the dean’s executive leader for administrative, financial, and operational affairs. The role supports academic and strategic priorities through sustainable resource decisions and effective institutional operations, overseeing financial strategy and planning, administrative operations, human resources and organizational planning, and the systems, policies, and controls that help departments and programs operate effectively. Working closely with the dean, other vice deans, department chairs, organized research unit directors, chief administrative officers, and health system and central campus partners, the vice dean provides stewardship of the school’s resources, advises on major investments and trade-offs, and aligns administrative capabilities with the school’s research, education, and clinical missions. The role also works at the interface between the school and health system partners, negotiating and refining financial arrangements for faculty physician services and planning and implementing health-system initiatives that depend on physician participation and alignment of academic and clinical priorities. The UCSF School of Medicine includes 28 academic departments, eight organized research units, and six interdisciplinary programs, with sites primarily in San Francisco, Oakland, and Fresno. It is home to approximately 3,800 faculty, 3,100 trainees, 1,800 non-faculty academics and students, and 5,900 staff. In FY26, its operating budget was $4.2 billion, with $1.5 billion in expendable net assets and $1.2 billion in restricted net assets.
