About The Position

The University of Florida, Department of Emergency Medicine, seeks an accomplished emergency physician leader to join our team as Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs. The UF Department of Emergency Medicine proudly maintains an affiliation with UF Health Shands Hospital, a distinguished 1,162-bed teaching facility renowned for its Level 1 trauma center and cutting-edge burn center. As the primary referral center for North Central Florida, our institution stands as a beacon of excellence in healthcare. The Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs works with the Department Chair to set the strategic, clinical, and operational priorities for the department. This leader serves as a key liaison with internal and external partners and provides executive oversight of the core clinical mission, guiding the development, implementation, and sustainment of the department’s clinical positions, priorities, and programs. Working closely with the Chair and department medical directors, the Vice Chair ensures alignment across the clinical and academic missions.

Requirements

  • All physicians must be Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • ABEM/ABOEM Board Certified/Board-Eligible.
  • Associate Professor or an equivalent combination of Assistant Professor and clinical leadership experience.
  • Candidates must be eligible for a medical staff appointment and clinical privileges under the UF Health Shands Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws.

Nice To Haves

  • Six or more years of experience in operations leadership, including experience leading emergency medicine within a complex multihospital system.
  • Experience in an academic setting, with eligibility to join at the rank of Associate Professor at minimum.
  • Formal training through an MBA or similar program preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated track record of mentoring and developing junior faculty in both operations and administrative areas.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within an academic department and in working across other departments.
  • Strong interdisciplinary team leadership and followership skills.
  • Strong direct management skills, including experience managing emergency medicine faculty within a complex healthcare system.
  • Participation at the regional and/or national level of Emergency Medicine.
  • An understanding of the complexities of academic life and the interactions among departments, divisions, hospitals, and health care systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and manages a clinical strategic plan that ensures consistent growth and success across all missions.
  • Assists with key recruitments for Division and Department leadership positions.
  • Works to ensure that the University of Florida College of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine, and UF Health Shands clinical goals are integrated and aligned.
  • Works closely with department leadership to develop and manage a Clinical Services Agreement and governance.
  • Understands and responds to departmental, organizational, and external business drivers, opportunities, and threats.
  • Sets priorities and key metrics to support aggressive growth goals across clinical missions.
  • Strengthens current clinical programs needed to achieve the DEM and COM vision and goals.
  • Works with department leadership to create and implement new clinical programs that advance the DEM vision and goals.
  • Ensures alignment across all units through regular meetings with the divisions.
  • Partners with the Chair, Vice Chair of Administrative Affairs, Vice Chair of Education, Vice Chair of Research, and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs to maintain a united vision and shared priorities for the DEM.
  • Represents the department with internal and external clinical partners.
  • Develops strong relationships with clinical departments and hospital leadership.
  • Works with the clinical divisions to understand their unique challenges and identify opportunities within their units.
  • Provides leadership in developing off-campus clinical programs.
  • Supports the DEM Chair and Vice Chairs across all strategic initiatives.
  • Serves as a trusted partner and advisor to the DEM Chair.
  • Works closely with site Medical Directors to establish new care pathways and ensure integration across all sites.
  • Provides mentorship for operations-focused faculty.
  • Participates in annual clinical division reviews and sets key success metrics for the clinical divisions.
  • Integrates and balances the DEM’s missions across the department.
  • Ensures the DEM clinical vision and goals are met by ED sites and clinical division leaders.
