About The Position

VCA Los Altos Animal Hospital is seeking an experienced Registered Veterinary Technician Supervisor to join their team of dedicated veterinary professionals at their fast-paced multi-doctor practice in Long Beach. The practice provides high-quality care for patients with a positive, team-oriented work environment. The Technician Supervisor will be responsible for the development, mentorship, and retention of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants reporting to them. The mission is to provide each patient with superb care and win the confidence of pet parents by delivering an outstanding client experience, partnering for the lifelong care of companion animals. The role utilizes skills in physical examinations, patient assessment, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation and assisting, dentistry, radiology, laboratory work, venipuncture, catheter placement, pharmacy, patient recovery, client communication, and compassionate care of hospitalized animals. The supervisor will also maintain a clean and well-organized treatment area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing and oral).
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience.
  • Certification required (RVT, CVT, LVT).
  • Dentistry skills including extractions.
  • Experience in leadership and/or management.

Responsibilities

  • Development, mentorship, and retention of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants.
  • Provide superb patient care and an outstanding client experience.
  • Utilize skills in physical examinations and patient assessment.
  • Monitor anesthesia.
  • Assist with surgical preparation and procedures.
  • Perform dentistry, including extractions.
  • Conduct radiology.
  • Perform laboratory work.
  • Perform venipuncture and catheter placement.
  • Manage pharmacy.
  • Oversee patient recovery.
  • Engage in client communication.
  • Provide compassionate care for hospitalized animals.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized treatment area.
  • Ensure a smooth workflow each day for excellent patient care.
  • Create and release the Technician department schedule.
  • Schedule and lead monthly Technician department meetings.
  • Order and maintain inventory of medical supplies, including Controlled Substances.
  • Maintain hospital machinery and ensure timely repairs.
  • Conduct reviews and create development plans for direct reports.
  • Lead or sit-in during disciplinary conversations for direct reports.
  • Develop and implement training tools and development plans.
  • Assist with improving patient workflow and helping doctors understand support staff skillsets.
  • Deliver effective new hire orientation to promote retention.
  • Engage in solution-focused discussions to promote support staff input and collaboration.
  • Foster growth and talent development of direct reports.
  • Establish opportunities for student internships and externships.
